HomewoodGraduate Board (HGB) Committee • Made up of faculty and students from KSAS and WSE • Primary purpose of the committee is to ensure the integrity of the PhD • Oversees committee selection for the Graduate Board Oral (GBO) exam • Approves degree candidates for ASEN PhDs and AS Masters degrees

Nonresident/LOA Status • HGB Chair reviews requests for Nonresident and LOA Status • Nonresident is a full-time status for ABD students. Students are permitted up to 10 semesters of NR status • LOA is approved leave from the University. No degree work can be done when on LOA. Students are permitted up to 4 semesters
Grace periods • If all requirements are met before the first day of class (fall and spring semesters) tuition is not charged for that upcoming semester • If all requirements are met within the first 8 weeks of the fallsemester or first 4 weeks of the spring semester, the student is eligible for tuition reimbursement by Student Accts for the current semester
Deadlines • If degree candidate completes by the: • October HGB deadline and the HGB receives all documentation, the student will be added to the fall completion list • March/April HGB deadline and the HGB receives all documentation, the student will be added to the spring completion list • July deadline and the HGB deadline and the HGB receives all documentation, the student will be added to the summer completion list
Deadlines • If the degree candidate completes after the HGB deadlines, he/she will be placed on the next degree candidates listing
HGB Requirements • Fulfill 2 consecutive semesters of full-time resident status per degree program • Pass the GBO exam • Readers Letter • Dissertation submission • Email to HGB including Dissertation title and scanned copy of Commercial Binding Office receipt • Application for Graduation (Registrar’s Office) • Certificate of Advanced Degree Completion
GBO Exam • Preliminary – typically taken during 2nd or 3rd year, prior to dissertation research being started • Final – defense of dissertation • 5 faculty members • Committee is to be selected by advisor or designated faculty member by Chair of dept.
Readers Letters • Two faculty signatures required • Must be on letterhead • Must include a date • Must attest to dissertation being: • new knowledge • worthy of publication • completed as part of the PhD degree requirement set
Submission of Dissertation • Submit dissertation to the Commercial Binding Office located in the MSE Library • There is a Dissertation Guidelines resource available online • Specifications for the format and presentation of the dissertation must be met for the Commercial Binding Office to accept (including title)
Dissertation Title • Must be in Title format. For example: • The Impact of Health Interventions on Fertility and Education: New Evidence • Can contain no symbols or mathematical equations. For example: • Not acceptable: Group Cohomology and Quadratic Forms Where 2 = 5 • Acceptable: Group Cohomology and Quadratic Forms Where 2 Equals 5
Confirmation of Submission • An email must be sent by the student to the HGB (homewoodgradboard@jhu.edu) • Email must include the dissertation title as it was submitted to the Commercial Binding Office • Email must include a scanned copy of dissertation submission receipt provided by the Commercial Binding Office at time of submission • Title provided is used in Commencement booklet and on the student’s transcript
Certificate of Completion • Completed by the department administrator • Signed by the Chair of the department • Indicates the degree programand semester of last registration • Indicates thesis advisor and advising start date • Dates used on form MUST be on or prior to the HGB deadline dates
Key Communication The student is expected to communicate with: • Department • Expected to Graduate List • Registrar’s Office • Application to Graduate • If dissertation is submitted to the Commercial Binding Office prior to the first day of classes of any term • HGB • Email following dissertation submission
