Reasons for the changes All 13 Bucks Grammar Schools are now academies Modern research into ability and its assessment The impact of coaching Pupil stress and anxiety Curriculum time take to administer the previous test procedure
What remains the same Bucks is a selective authority The tests will take place in the Autumn Term in Year 6 The tests will take place in the primary school setting Parents have the choice to not put their child through the tests The qualifying mark for grammar schools is 121 The tests are a multiple choice format with a separate answer sheet Allowances can be made for those children with SEN Parents can request a Selection Review if the child does not achieve the qualifying mark

3: TESTS • Two tests • Test preparation in advance • Each 45-50 mins • Verbal, numerical and non-verbal ability in both tests • Sections separately timed • CD admin • Adaptations for pupils with special educational need
4: VERBAL ABILITY • Verbal reasoning • Comprehension • Vocabulary
5: NUMERICAL ABILITY • Problem-solving • Multi-stage
6: NON-VERBAL ABILITY • Reasoning in a diagrammatic/abstract context
7: MARKING & RESULTS • OMR answer sheets • Single total score • Age-standardised • Qualifying score = 121
8: PREPARATION • Familiarisation sheet • Preparation papers = 2 x 30 mins
9: BENEFITS • Ability is multi-faceted • A range of contexts • Less time taken • Reduced pupil stress • Reduces impact of coaching
10: TRIAL • Purpose: tests of appropriate standard • 1000 Bucks pupils in Y6 • March 2013
11: TIMETABLE • Determined by government deadline of 31 October • Both preparation papers on one day • Both actual tests on one day • Proposed preparation day: 10 September • Proposed test day: 12 September
