AGENDA • How do YOU know? • Overview • Contextual Intuition • Intuition and the Five Contexts • Mirror Neurons and the Vagus Nerve • Intuition and the Right Hemisphere • Completion
INTUITION IS….. • Anything you know without conscious processing, thought, or observation
How do YOU know? Think of one (only one for now) place you feel/receive/notice your intuition Write your name on a post-it Stick the post-it on the corresponding part of your body Find someone who has a post-it in the same area (if you can -- if not, find anyone) Share how you get your intuition from this place After you’ve both shared, place your post-its on body chart in the appropriate spot Repeat (another place you ALSO feel/receive/notice your intuition and another partner for sharing)
Collective Consciousness Contextual Intuition Other Senses Mirror Neurons Right Hemisphere Heart, Gut, Vagus
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • CONTEXTUAL = I just know • MIRROR NEURONS = I feel something in my body that is happening in your body • HEART/GUT and VAGUS NERVE = I feel something in my body • RIGHT HEMISPHERE = I see a picture • ADDITIONAL SENSES = I smell, I hear • COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS = Something comes to me that I couldn’t possibly know
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • CONTEXTUAL = I just know
CONTEXTUAL INTUITION • Part One—Expertise • Pick an area you know a lot about and write down as much as possible in 5 minutes • What are all the experiences you have had that contributed to your expertise? • What mistakes have you made and corrected? • Successes and failures? • Different places, times and people who played a role? • Get a partner and share: • What do you “just know” in this area? • What is in your unconscious competence?
CONTEXTUAL INTUITION • Part Two—Coaching • Write down as much as possible in 5 minutes • What are all the experiences you have had that contribute to your contextual coaching intuition? • What mistakes have you made and corrected? • Successes and failures? • Different places, times and people who have played a role? • Same partner, take turns sharing—as a coach: • What do you really trust in this area of intuition? • Where could you trust your contextual intuition more?
SO WHAT? So what?
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • MIRROR NEURONS = I feel something in my body that is happening in your body
MIRROR NEURONS • Mirror neurons fire when we do an action or when we observe or imagine the action • Help us learn by observing and imitating others • Help us feel and understand others – create connection • If we don’t hold another as part of our group, mirror neurons for empathy don’t fire
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • HEART/GUT and VAGUS NERVE = I feel something in my body
Vagus Nerve • Vagus = wandering. • Connected to almost every organ in our body. • Most information (80-90%) flows to the brain. • Controls voice, inner ear, small muscles of face. • Directly connected to our ability to self-regulate and be emotionally intelligent.
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • ADDITIONAL SENSES = I smell, I hear • COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS = Something comes to me that I couldn’t possibly know
INTUITION GAME • Person A tells a NEUTRAL fact about someone they know (not in the room). • Person B checks in with their own body response. • Person B writes down 2-3 words or images that come to them about how A feels about the person they are thinking of. DO NOT CENSOR YOURSELF. • Person B tells A words, asks • What’s true? • What’s helpful?
THE INTUITION SYSTEM • RIGHT HEMISPHERE = I see a picture
Visual circuits create “mental maps” Understand more quickly and completely Activate RH understanding, subtle aspects of a situation Connects the more visual RH to the symbolic language of the LH Metaphor & Integration
MANDALAS • Get a partner • Coachee tells coach a five to seven minute story about something that is troubling them. Coach may ask clarifying questions (but does not coach at this point). • Coach draws what they are inspired to draw in the mandala circle. No censoring or editing. Put aside when done. • Switch and repeat. • AFTER both have told stories and each coach has done a drawing, take ten minutes each to interpret the drawing. Coach hold an open space and be curious. Client’s job is to make meaning of what coach drew.
SO WHAT? So what?
COMPLETION • What CONTEXTUAL intuition did you build today? • What does your body know about what you learned today? • What images/metaphors do you have for the day?
