  3. Treatment of titles… • Do it this way… • In Book 2 of Homer’s The Odyssey … • In the poem Beowulf, … • In Homer’s Iliad …

  4. Present Tense • When writing about literature, we do so in the present tense • His ego came from his fighting skills. He was a great warrior and stopped a whole war because he defeated a giant in about ten seconds. • His ego comes from his fighting skills. He is a great warrior and stops a whole war because he defeats a giant man in ten seconds. • His intelligence helped him escape from the Cyclops.   5. Quotes – you need them! • They can not stand alone • They must be introduced • This is demonstrated when Achilles asks Odysseus, “But why must / the Argives fight / the Trojans?” (336-338). • For example, Odysseus cleverly tricks the Cyclops by saying, “Cyclops / you ask my honorable name? Remember / the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. / My name is Nobody” (231-235). • When quote ends in exclamation point or question mark…keep them in the quote. If ends in period or anything else, remove it.

  6. Write clearly… • Read to yourself out loud…seriously. Ask: Does this sound good? Can I make it better; can I make it more clear? • A description of his battles is that “Achilles exploded forward / fury incarnate behind the curve / of his shield” (297-299). • To exemplify Achilles’ power in battle, Homer writes “Achilles exploded forward / fury incarnate behind the curve / of his shield” (297-299).

  7. Once you quote… • Once you quote, talk about the quote. What does this quote do?What does it show? • Odysseus says, “I had not / yet spoken of Scylla / a plague that could not be dealt with / for my companions may be terrified” (231-234).
