Present Tense • When writing about literature, we do so in the present tense • His ego came from his fighting skills. He was a great warrior and stopped a whole war because he defeated a giant in about ten seconds. • His ego comes from his fighting skills. He is a great warrior and stops a whole war because he defeats a giant man in ten seconds. • His intelligence helped him escape from the Cyclops. Quotes – you need them! • They can not stand alone • They must be introduced • This is demonstrated when Achilles asks Odysseus, “But why must / the Argives fight / the Trojans?” (336-338). • For example, Odysseus cleverly tricks the Cyclops by saying, “Cyclops / you ask my honorable name? Remember / the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. / My name is Nobody” (231-235). • When quote ends in exclamation point or question mark…keep them in the quote. If ends in period or anything else, remove it.
