When the keel of NORTH CAROLINA was laid in October of 1937, she was the first battleship to be constructed in sixteen years. • She became the first of ten fast battleships to join American fleet in World War II. NORTH CAROLINA (BB 55) and her sister ship, WASHINGTON (BB 56), comprised the NORTH CAROLINA Class. She was dedicated on 29 April 1962 as the State's memorial to its World War II veterans and the 10,000 North Carolinians who died during the war.

Duke University/Durham! • When James B. Duke picked the site for Duke University’s West Campus, in 1925, he chose to locate the Chapel on the site’s highest ridge. The Chapel was the first building planned for the new campus, but the last one to be done. Construction started in 1930, was done in 1935, and cost nearly $2.3 million. The Chapel began to be used before its stained-glass windows and other details were finished.

The Carolina Basketball Museum • The Carolina Basketball Museum, located on the campus of the University of North Carolina, is open to the general public Tuesday - Friday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday. Admission is free to the public. The Carolina Basketball Museum is located on the first floor of the Ernie Williamson Athletics Center.
