Colloidal Polymerization of Core-Shell Dipolar MonomersJeffrey Pyun, University of Arizona, DMR 0645618 20 nm 100 nm 100 nm 100 nm 100 nm Pyun et al., ACS Nano 2012, in press We have demonstrated the ability to make novel colloidal monomers that for the first time combine dipolar cobalt nanoparticles onto semiconductor nanorods based on CdSe@CdS This enables the construction of complex assemblies and colloidal polymerization to combine p-type cobalt oxides with n-type II-VI semiconductors. This report is also one of the few true multi-step total synthesis schemes using all colloidal reagents, where full details synthesis, purifcation and isolated yields are reported (Pyun et al,. Colloidal Polymerization of Core-Shell Dipolar Monomers Jeffrey Pyun, University of Arizona, DMR 0645618 Education: Funding from this NSF-CAREER award has enabled support of four graduate students, Pei Keng (PhD 2011) Bo Yun Kim (PhD. 2011), Larry Hill (4rd yr), Sarah Rasmussen (MS-2009), a research scientist (Mathew Bull-now UA MedSchool) and entering of undergraduates, Sean Derosa (1st-yr ChemE-UT Austin), Jon Ji, Nathan Richey and Kyle Arrington. In Summer 2012, both Richey and Arrington have been involved in an REU experience geared toward synthesis of novel semiconductor nanorod-polymer hybrid materials for colloidal polymerization. As a key educational effort for the REU and the Pyun group at UA, Pyun has developed series of summer workshops on professional development skills in technical writing and communication. All group members have worked and critqued assignments for technical reports, resumes-CV, cover letters Outreach: Continued outreach efforts with Tucson High School in Tucson, has focused on a joint research class (senior, Tucson HS) and work with Ms Jennifer Miller at the Thornydale Elementary School. New efforts at both institutions are being formulated in collaboration with teachers to developed new module on battery science and testing. International Impact: Pyun recently granted joint appointment in Chemical Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) as Associate Professor for work in Energy storage and conversion enabled by NSF-CAREER funded work on polymers. Exchange students from SNU have been visiting Pyun during Summer 2011, 2012. For SNU exchange students, mentoring on technical communication has been conducted along with collaboration with UA students in Pyun group Pyun with SNU students K-Arrington N-Richey
