  6. Germany and World War I • Germany was punished for the war - blamed for the war - required to pay war damages - stripped of territories and military rights • Caused major poverty when U.S. Depression began

  7. Conditions in Germany and Europe • Widespread debt - high inflation struck the economies of many countries - in Germany, money was devalued • Democratic governments began to fail - gave rise to dictators

  8. Nationalism • Intense loyalty to one’s country - desire for national power - new territory (imperialism) • Prosperity through control and conflict

  11. Benito Mussolini • Fascist leader of Italy - strength of the nation over the individual (fascism) - Called “Il Duce” • complete control of Italy and its people • Removed opposition - “black shirts”

  12. Adolph Hitler • Promoted German Nationalism - return to prior power • Led the Nazi Party - unify German people - purify the German race - expand territory • Became Chancellor in 1933
