Germany and World War I • Germany was punished for the war - blamed for the war - required to pay war damages - stripped of territories and military rights • Caused major poverty when U.S. Depression began
Conditions in Germany and Europe • Widespread debt - high inflation struck the economies of many countries - in Germany, money was devalued • Democratic governments began to fail - gave rise to dictators
Nationalism • Intense loyalty to one’s country - desire for national power - new territory (imperialism) • Prosperity through control and conflict

Adolph Hitler • Promoted German Nationalism - return to prior power • Led the Nazi Party - unify German people - purify the German race - expand territory • Became Chancellor in 1933
