American Language and Culture ProgramJuly 30 – August 30, 2006
Program Goals • To improve English ability • To develop international friendships • To develop cross-cultural understanding • To develop personal growth
Overview of the Program • Students will take English courses as official Stanford students • Students continue to develop English skills and develop an understanding of American culture through various activities • Students will have a multi-national experience through interaction with other Asian students and Stanford hosts
English Classes • Taught by StanfordLanguage Center • Small class size (no more than 12 students)
English Classes • Topics to be covered: • Social stratification/Diversity • Public opinion, media, pop culture • Environmental Issues • Oral presentation at the end
Out-of-Class Activities • Academic activities: • Panel discussions/presentations on racial & ethnic issues, gay & lesbian issues • Work with non-profit organizations • Visits to Silicon Valley companies
Out-of-Class Activities • Fun activities: • Trip to SF, Yosemite • Music performances • Sport events
Multi-National Experience • Other Asian Students • Stanford Hosts
Asia-US Service-LearningProgramAugust 4 – August 31, 2006“Service is the rent we pay for living on this earth.”
Program History & Goals History • Developed in 2005 in response to growing interest in service and volunteerism • Based on a combination of American Language and Culture and Alternative Spring Break models Goals • To deepen students interest in and understanding of public service and non-profit organizations • To study complex social and environmental issues through both academic and hands on activities • To increase students sense of meaning and direction • To connect “mind learning” with “heart learning”
What is ‘Service-Learning’? • “Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community.” • Emphasis on reflection
Program Overview • Pre-Program • Stanford workshop course • Service Project Week • Wrap Up • Post Program and Service-Learning Conference
Service Project Groups • Your “core group” throughout the program. 8 – 10 students per group • Placement based on participants interests and space availability • Four Service Project Groups • Environment and Agriculture • Education • Health and Disabilities • Urban Issues
Program Coordinators • Plan and lead Service Projects • Lead discussions for “Service in US and Asia” class • Act as guides and “instant friends” • 8 Stanford Coordinators • 4 Asia Coordinators (alumni of VIA programs)
Pre-Program • AUSL Orientation and Retreat • Presentation topics chosen and research conducted
Stanford University & “Service in the US and Asia” Workshop Class • First 2 weeks of program based at Stanford • “AUSL Orientation” • “Service in the US and Asia” workshop • Extracurricular activities, panel discussions, etc.
Service Project Week • Mix of hands on volunteering, visits to service organizations, discussions, reflection, and fun • Connected to topics covered during “Service in US and Asia” class • Depending on service group, accommodations include home stays, hostels, and camping
Wrap Up • Two-day retreat following Service Week in Santa Cruz Mountains • Final event at the World Affairs Council of San Francisco • Two days of farewell activities in San Francisco
Post Program • Final Report Project • Stanford Coordinators visit to Asia • Service-Learning Conference in Tokyo
Application Process • Application deadline is lateApril • Interview will be during early May • Results will be announced shortly after the interview • Orientation will be held May 3 • Deposit of $500 to be paid by June 5
Interview • Interview will be in English • It will be for about 10 minutes. • We are looking for enthusiastic students who are eager to learn through participating in ALC. Be prepared to explain why you want to participate in ALC and what specifically you want to get out of this program.
