Confucian Beliefs & Values • Valued order and harmony. • Wanted to restore the Mandate of Heaven (rulers must rule wisely and be devoted to their people, in accordance with Heaven) • Emphasized our duties to others. • Valued family loyalty and respect for elders.
Golden Rule: "Do not to others what you do not want done to yourself." • People should know their place in society - 5 key relationships with mutual obligations: • father and son, • Man and wife, • emperor and subject, • elder and younger brother, and • Elder and younger friends.
3 Moral Precepts (Principles) • Filial piety – xiao (devotion, respect, and obedience to parents) • Humaneness – ren (goodness; kindness; benevolence) • Ritual decorum or ideal way of behaving – li (people should be models of behavior for others)
