Summary of Event Slavery was a terrible fact of American history. Many Africans were forced into the life of slavery. They were owned by white masters to work on plantations without pay or the freedom to leave if they wanted to. Most were treated with cruelty.
When? • In the United States in the early colonial days 1619-1863. • In 1619, a Dutch ship brought the first 20 enslaved Africans to the Virginia colony Jamestown. • Slavery lasted over 250 years
Where? • In Southern states below the Mason Dixon Line in the United States of America • Slaves had to work in cotton fields and plantations.
Who was Involved? • Owners of plantations or large farms • Africans who were forced to be slaves
What was the Purpose? • Owners forced slaves to work the cotton fields without pay • Owners didn’t need to work and still made money for their crops • Plantation owners became very wealthy
Additional Facts • Slaves were considered property. They could be bought and sold. • Slave owners were allowed to give severe punishment on slaves. • Slaves were not allowed to learn to read or write.
Outcome • Many slaves escaped to freedom on the Underground Railroad. • Slavery ended on January 1,1863 • President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War that stated slavery was to be ended in all states.
