Maryland Pharmacy Coalition (MPC) The Coalition consists of: • Maryland Pharmacists Association • Maryland Chapter of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists • Maryland Pharmaceutical Society • Maryland Society of Health System Pharmacists • Student Government Associations of the Schools of Pharmacy in Maryland

  3. Purpose of MPC Purpose: To provide a forum for discussion and understanding between Maryland's pharmacy associations on issues impacting on the practice of pharmacy and the public's health. The Maryland Pharmacy Coalition will strengthen relationships between pharmacy associations in the state and will encourage collaborative efforts to benefit the pharmacists and patients of Maryland.

  5. Legislative Process • Every bill enters General Assembly via sponsorship by a Legislator • Constitution of MD requires each bill to be read THREE different times in each house The LATER a bill is introduced, the harder it is for the bill to be passed into law.

  7. Legislative Process • Both houses must pass the same exact bill • Conference committee may be used to resolve differences in the bills • If report is adopted, bill is voted on for final passage in each house • If report is rejected by either house, the bill fails

  8. Legislative Process • Bills finally become law when signed by the Governor • If Governor vetoes a bill, the General Assembly has the power to override the veto with 3/5 vote from each house

  9. Legislative Day 2013 Attend the 13th annual Maryland Pharmacy Legislative Day on February 14th, 2013 Location: Francis Scott Key Auditorium at St. John’s College

  10. Legislative Day Pre-Registration Appointments are made in advance and take considerable time and effort Groups organized by legislative district

What to Expect • 6:00am Leave for Annapolis, MD • 7:30-8:15 Morning brief with all participants • 8:00-10:00 Scheduled appointments with Legislators* • 10:00-11:00 Attend session of General Assembly • 11:30 Student photo on the steps of the State House • 12:00 Student buses return to campuses * Some appointments may be scheduled later if necessary

  12. Why Should I Go? • Advocating for the pharmacy profession • Learn more about current pharmacy issues • Legislators ACTUALLY listen • YOUR voice can have a HUGE impact • Develop your leadership skills • Network with other pharmacists and potential employers

  13. Without Legislative Day… • Pharmacists would not be able to perform vaccinations • Collaborative practice would not exist in the state of Maryland • The scope of practice in pharmacy would gradually shrink

  14. But I’m not from Maryland! Don’t worry, there’s plenty to do for you too! • Pharmacists in every state depend on other states to achieve progress in their profession • Groups are selected to deliver important messages and special issues • If you can contribute to patient care within the state, legislators will want to hear from you!

  15. Legislator Visit:What to Bring With You? A nice suit/business attire, white coats… we’re professionals and should dress the part Briefhandout or packet of information to reinforce your message. (Provided by MPC) Business cards or copies of your personal and business contact information. Your personality… talk it up, make yourself memorable. Legislators also like to hear from students attending their colleges and universities.

  16. Legislator Visit:What Can You Expect? Time will be tight… you may have to meet with a staff member or split the group to meet with multiple representatives. Most legislators have no idea how important pharmacists are to their health…educate them and offer examples from their communities. Your representatives will be friendly! That’s how they got elected… Be willing to pick your battles They will have questions…be prepared or offer to follow-up.

  17. Legislator Visit:What If I don’t know? MPC provides position statements with supporting facts: Use Them! You will be working with a group: Divide and Conquer Focus on your passion: legislators want to hear your story

  18. Legislator Visit:How should you follow-up? Respond in a timely manner to any questions or requests for information (if you don’t know the answer, don’t make up the answer – help is available). Send a letter or email thanking them for their time and reinforcing your views. Offer yourself as a source of pharmacy information in the future. REMEMBER: You know your profession best!
