  1. The Endocrine System

  2. Function of the Endocrine System • Release hormones into the bloodstream to deliver messages throughout the body.

  3. Way to Remember Endocrine = Hormone system “Guys cringe when girls have crazy hormones!”

  4. Endocrine System Affects All Body Systems • The hormones released by the endocrine system affect almost all cells and tissues! • The endocrine system overlaps all other organ systems!

  5. Nervous System vs. Endocrine System • Nervous System • Sends messages to a certain area or a few cells. • Very fast! • Similar to calling a few friends on the phone to deliver a message. • Endocrine System • Can send a message to almost every cell in the body. • Slower and longer lasting than nerve impulses. • Similar to broadcasting your message on the radio.

  6. Hormones • Hormones - Chemicals released in one part of the body that travel through the blood-stream and affect the activities of cells in other parts of the body. • Hormones bind to specific chemical receptors on cells. • Cells that have receptors for a particular hormone are called target cells. • If a cell does not have receptors or the receptors do not respond to a particular hormone, the hormone has no effect on it.

  7. Glands • Gland – Organ that produces and releases a substance, or secretion.

  8. Some Examples of Glands • Pituitary Gland – Secretes nine hormones that directly regulate many body functions and controls the actions of several other endocrine glands. • Thyroid Gland – Major role in regulating the body’s metabolism. • Parathyroid and Thyroid Glands – Act to maintain homeostasis of calcium levels in the blood. YOU DO NOT NEED TO MEMORIZE THESE! THEY ARE JUST FOR EXAMPLES!

  9. More Examples of Glands • Adrenal Gland – Release hormones that help the body prepare for and deal with stress. • Pancreas – Secretes insulin and glucagon to help keep the level of glucose in the blood stable. • Gonads (Reproductive Glands) – Produce gametes and secrete sex hormones. YOU DO NOT NEED TO MEMORIZE THESE! THEY ARE JUST FOR EXAMPLES!
