Problem Description • Lung Diseases • Burn hazards • Short stove lifespan • Limited fuel resources • Low income
Goals Low Cost Sustainable Long Life Span Efficient Low Emissions
Economic Background • To ship a 10 pound package from Pittsburgh, PA to Nairobi, Kenya it costs almost $300 (22,290 ksh) • Kenyans are willing to pay: • 20ksh ($0.27) per day on fuel • 10ksh ($0.13) per person per meal
Environmental Background • Deforestation (Farmland, Urban development) • Along the coastal belt the climate is fairly hot and humid all year round. (72.30-86.50 F) • In the far north, temperatures can be high. (74.660-94.60 F) • Central area (Nairobi) has a mild climate. (56.50-77.30 F)
Social Background • Different Tribes • Varying Family Size • Less Territorial than most of Africa • Women do most of the work • Religion: Christianity, Islam, Athiest • 82.5% Literacy rate

Technical Issues Stove comparison
Customer Needs Assessment • Cheap fuel available in Kenya • The stove should cook for at least 5 people / meal • It should cook food as fast as the Jiko or even faster • Easy to handle (also easy to clean) • It should last for at least 5 years.
Community Needs Assessment • A secure product which does not require a window or a big chimney connected to the outside of the house • Culturally accepted (no sharing with others) • The fuel should be available in Kenya • The price of the new stove should be less than $20 ( KES 1,500)
Target Specifications • Price: Between $13 and $15 • Lifespan: 5-10 years • Fuel / Materials local • Able to cook for 5 people • 50% Less Emissions • 50% Less Fuel • 50% Less Cooking Time
Fuel Brainstorming • Charcoal • Vegetable oil • Briquettes • Kerosene • Wood • Coal
Best Fuel Solution • Briquettes made from sugar bagasse • Waste bagasse is normally dumped and burned in fields near the factory • Smokeless • Efficient • No spark
Stove Brainstorming • Improved Jiko • Filter Stove • Multi-use Stove • The Masai
Cost Analysis • The cost of Aluminum is $0.95 per pound • The cost of Ceramic is $0.30per pound • We need 7 pounds of Aluminum = $ 6.65 and 4 pounds of Ceramic = $1.2 Total: $7.85 + $ 1 Labor = $8.85
Goals met • 50% less emissions? • Reduced to little to no emissions with briquettes • 50% less fuel? • Uses less, more environmentally friendy, cheaper fuel • 50% less cooking time? • Will take about half the time to boil a pot of water
