EDSGN 100-6: Kodak Power Spin Edgar Yip Nicholas Buckley Adam Thorsen Alan Love February 22nd 2009
We Recognize The Need… • Redesign disposable cameras to offset the declining market due to digital camera sales.
Definition of the Problem • We want to design a disposable camera to address the problems of picture quality, durability, e-waste, and sustainability.
Contents • Disposable Cameras • Electronic Waste and Sustainability • Survey Statistics • Camera Problems • Our Proposal • Faster Shutter Speed • Wristband Attachment/Tripod Port • Diamond Grip • Generator System • Cost • Conclusion
Electronic Waste • E-waste is electronic material that is not properly recycled or reused. • Can cause: cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes, fragile bones, paralysis, coma and death www.bestbuy.ca/.../default.asp?logon=&langid=EN
Sustainability • Ability to maintain a certain process or state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sustainable_development.svg
Camera Problems • Picture Quality • Durability • E-Waste • Sustainability www.clokansas.org/pages/services.htm www.abc.net.au/.../gallery/photos/s2090414.htm
Our Proposal • Faster Shutter Speed to optimize picture quality • Tripod Port to connect with standard tripods to increase picture quality through stability • Wristband and Diamond Grip to decrease probability of dropping camera; thus indirectly increasing durability • Generator System to replace battery and reduce E-Waste and increase sustainability
Faster Shutter Speed • Larger Shutter Armature • Shorter Connector Bar • BETTER PICTURES!
Disposable Cameras of the FUTURE WRISTBAND ATTACHMENT TRIPOD PORT
Diamond Grip Front Left Side Back
Disposable Cameras of the FUTURE The battery will be replaced by a generator to convert mechanical to electrical energy and to reduce the e-waste due to the chemicals in the battery.
Disposable Cameras of the FUTURE Rotor (3 coils of copper wire) Magnet (Rare Earth) Casing Assembly Exterior Gear Brushes System
Experimental Data • How it works: • 2 Gear system • Dial gear: 12.mm radius • Secondary gear: 5.mm radius • When exterior gear is spun at 1 revolution/second the voltage output is 1.5 volts. • 1.5 volt battery/194 flashes • =.0073 volts/ flash
Cost • Original Cost: $11 • New Estimated Cost: $13.00 • Eliminated Battery: -$1.10 • Generator: +$3.00 • Wrist band: +$0.10 • Despite the new camera design costing more than the original, the generator can be reused while the battery in the original camera can’t be reused. Our design will be more sustainable in the long term.
Conclusion BETTER PICTURES ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ACCESSORIES ERGONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY
