RTI is… The practice of providing high-quality instruction/intervention matched to student needs and using learning rate over time and level of performance to inform educational decisions IDEA Partnership July 2007
RTI is… The practice of meeting the academic and behavioral needs of all students through a variety of services containing the following key elements: High quality instruction and scientific research-based tiered interventions aligned with individual student needs Frequent monitoring of student progress to make results-based academic and/or behavioral decisions Application of student response data to important educational decisions (such as those regarding placement, intervention, curriculum, and instructional goals and methodologies) RTI Division of Curriculum TEA

High Quality Instruction: Scientifically research-based and taught with fidelity This gives us confidence that it will be effective with a majority of students. Areas of focus: Reading – phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension Math – problem solving, fluency, conceptual knowledge, and communication/reasoning
What is the Role of the Alief ISD Central Intervention Coordinator? • Leading the District Response to Instruction committee and consulting with content coordinators/interventionists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Response to Intervention model in accordance with district and state standards. • Evaluating existing campus interventions to determine if they support the district Response to Intervention model. • Meeting with, consulting with, and/or training campus-based intervention specialists on a weekly basis.
Creating district handbooks/forms for RtI/STAT. • Reviewing, evaluating, recommending, and/or purchasing materials and services needed for implementing the RtI model. • Collaborating with Computer Intervention and Distance Learning Program Manager in identifying the most effective programs for intervention and developing a district level recommendation list. • Developing and coordinating district-wide professional development for the RtI model.
Scheduling regular meetings with campus leadership teams in developing the campus intervention program. • Providing technical assistance to teachers and administrators regarding the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. • Collaborating with district content coordinators, campus-based intervention specialists, and other campus staff in developing individualized service plans for students who are struggling in the general education classroom. • Monitoring and tracking required documentation and compliance with state guidelines.
What is the Role of the Alief ISD Campus-based intervention specialists? • Training campus staff and leadership teams on the Response to Intervention model, the STAT process, and the Tier 3 documentation requirements for students who need to be referred to special education. • Aligning campus materials, services, and processes needed for implementing the RtI model to the district model.
Delivering campus-level professional development for intervention strategies and programs. • Modeling classroom level interventions for classroom teachers. • Modeling pull-out interventions for campus interventionists and specialists.
Collaborating with the district level intervention coordinator in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Response to Intervention model. • Sitting on the campus RtI/STAT committee and providing coaching and technical assistance to the members. * Please note that the roles and responsibilities may differ at the secondary level and may change based upon additional research done on RtI at the secondary level.
Funding for Positions Alief ISD used ARRA Funding to fund both central and campus based positions. • Central RtI Coordinator – 220 day contract • Campus based specialists – 187 day contract (Teacher) 3 Options for campus based specialists • Full time RtI split between 2 campuses • Part time RtI and part time title • Full time other position and receives a stipend for work done for RtI
Collaboration with Special Education Meet weekly to review folders submitted with multi-tiered interventions. Collaborative training efforts district wide and campus based. Participated in planning meetings to support the transition of students from the RtI process to a referral for special education. Team effort support for campuses struggling with the implantation process.
STAT Process / Documents Student Teacher Assistance Team – STAT The STAT team is the group of knowledgeable individuals at the campus that meet to oversee the RtI process. These meetings are lead by the RtI Specialists. STAT forms were created to ensure consistency of the process at each campus. These campus based teams meet regularly to review student data and progress.

Educational decisions include: Is our instruction working? If not, how do we need to change it? If so, is the student catching up to his/her peers? How far behind is a student? What resources are needed? What types of interventions and levels of intensity are necessary? Who How often How long

Student Success Plan Next steps for RtI is the creation of a district wide web-based data collection system that includes attendance, report cards, test history, interventions, dyslexia and 504 eligibilities. Develop standard interventions across tiers due to high mobility within our district and to support a standardized tracking system.
