INTRODUCTION TO THE SHOW We are doing a PowerPoint presentation on the T.V SHOW The Simpsons. • The Simpsons was first aired in the U.K in September 1990 on Sky. • The Simpsons was created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. • We selected the show The Simpsons because it appeals to all age groups and its been running for 22 years and is still popular .
RESULTS OF OUR PRIMARY RESEARCH • We conducted a survey to determine the popularity of The Simpsons among the 24 students of our Media Production group. • Our survey was a form of primary research, i.e. the data we received was from our own investigations. • The data we received was quantitative as it showed the amount of participants who answered each question. • The results of our survey were not particularly reliable as they do not represent the wider population of the country; they are too concentrated on a specific demographic, i.e. young adults studying Media Production. • Our data showed that 85.7% of our sample liked the show, whilst only 14.3% of our sample didn’t like the show. • The survey we carried out clearly shows that the character most favoured among our sample was Bart Simpson.
RESULTS OF OUR SECONDARY RESEARCH • We found the results of our secondary research from a research organization BARB. • By viewing the top 30 shows and selecting the channel which broadcasted The Simpsons. Simpsons viewing figures on Sky 1 Monday, September 24th 2012, 18:29 – 383,000 views Monday, September 24th 2012, 19:02 – 440,000 views Monday, September 24th 2012, 19:31 – 461,000 views Tuesday, September 25th 2012, 19:01 – 437,000 views Sunday, September 30th 2012, 18:00 – 723,000 views • We were surprised about the viewing figures it had.
OUR TYPICAL AUDIENCE MEMBER We sketched a “Typical audience member” of The Simpsons and then had to describe the targeted age, gender, social class, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Our interpretation of the typical audience member is as follows: • Age : 8 – 40, because The Simpsons is enjoyed by adults and children mainly because it has humour that children and adults enjoy and also the show is broadcasted at 6 pm so majority of people have time to watch it because most jobs finish by 5 pm. • Gender : MALE & FEMALE, because the programme shows things that both male & female enjoy. • Ethnicity : ALL, because the programme show things that every kind of ethnic background will enjoy and the programme itself has characters with different ethnic background. • Class : LOW AND MID CLASS, because the show does use language and humors that the higher class might not be interested in. • Sexuality : ALL, because they have made the programme for all kind of sexual orientations which they will enjoy and by doing this they will get more viewers watching their programme.
