  1. PNGARNet Satellite Communication for Universities and Research Institutes: A New Design Peggy Kegana DWU - PNGUpdate – 15th April 2008

  2. PNGARNet Implementation - 2008 DWU IT Services

  3. Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT)

  4. 3 M Vanuatu

  5. Satellite in Geostationary Orbit – 38586 km

  6. Geostationary Orbits • The speed and height of these satellites allow them to remain synchronised above a specific location on the earth at all times. • Time delays of about 0.5 sec are experienced in back and forth transmissions which can be a problem for time-critical applications

  7. Transponder • Receiver tuned to uplink band • Frequency shifter to change frequency to downlink band • Power amplifier • Electric power from solar cells on flat panels

  8. ASIASAT 4 – Footprint (Area covered by downlink)

  9. Ground Station, Satellite, Hub

  10. Typical Client Side

  11. Main Hub – Speedcast - Hong Kong

  12. Internet Connection

  13. Speedcast / ASIASat NOC & Teleport

  14. Hong Kong Teleport • Hong Kong as a central convergent point for the Internet • Convergence of submarine cables – see next slide • Only 2/3 hops to US and UK improving access to WWW • Oceanic Broadband Solutions to serve as ISP for PNGARNet

  15. Colocated Server Farm at Hong Kong Hub (NOC or Data Centre) • Remote administration from DWU IT Services • Hardware maintained on-site • Hardware Redundancy • Clustering used to provide Load Balancing and Fault Tolerance

  16. Internet Access from Hong Kong– Optical Fibre Submarine Cables

  17. Server side

  18. Colocated Server Farm at Hong Kong Hub

  19. NOC / Data Centre

  20. Equipment Racks
