PNGARNet Satellite Communication for Universities and Research Institutes: A New Design Peggy Kegana DWU - PNGUpdate – 15th April 2008
PNGARNet Implementation - 2008 DWU IT Services
Geostationary Orbits • The speed and height of these satellites allow them to remain synchronised above a specific location on the earth at all times. • Time delays of about 0.5 sec are experienced in back and forth transmissions which can be a problem for time-critical applications
Transponder • Receiver tuned to uplink band • Frequency shifter to change frequency to downlink band • Power amplifier • Electric power from solar cells on flat panels
Hong Kong Teleport • Hong Kong as a central convergent point for the Internet • Convergence of submarine cables – see next slide • Only 2/3 hops to US and UK improving access to WWW • Oceanic Broadband Solutions to serve as ISP for PNGARNet
Colocated Server Farm at Hong Kong Hub (NOC or Data Centre) • Remote administration from DWU IT Services • Hardware maintained on-site • Hardware Redundancy • Clustering used to provide Load Balancing and Fault Tolerance
Internet Access from Hong Kong– Optical Fibre Submarine Cables
