  2. Importance of Family • More loyalty towards villages and family than towards leaders or government. • Kinship- connection by blood, marriage, or adoption. • Kinship groups formed clans. • Kinship groups formed local governments.

  3. Labor Specialization (LS) • LS- the doing of specific types of work by trained or knowledgeable workers. • Before LS, everyone was a farmer. • After LS, less farmers, but better farming. • Craftsmen made better farming tools. • Farmers actually chose farming.

  4. Kings and Griots • Kings- controllers of trade in Africa. • Kept trade running smoothly. • Central religious figures. • Griots- Official storyteller. • History teacher. • Performed religious rituals. • Entertained and instructed.

  8. Why was Ghana an empire? • Bordered the Sahara desert. • Biggest trade across the Sahara was… • SALT FOR GOLD. • Ghana’s kings controlled this trade and created huge wealth from it. • Keeping location of gold a secret let Ghana control the value of gold!

  9. Influence of Islam • Muslim traders brought beliefs to Ghana. • Islam brought a written language and scholars to Ghana kings. • Kings converted, governments were reformed. • People chose between tradition, Islam, or a combo… Tradislam.
