Migration Technologies • What do we offer today? • Where are these products headed? • What is new and Exciting? • What is in store for the future?
Storage Migrator Products Storage Migrator Remote Agents • Storage Migrator Server • Windows NT • UNIX Secondary/Tertiary Media
Storage Migrator Products • Storage Migrator: • Windows NT & UNIX Based HSM Applications • UNIX – v3.2 • Widest range of platform support in industry • Windows NT – v2.6 • Co-developed Remote Storage Server in W2K • Storage Migrator Remote: • “Agents” that migrate data from NT or UNIX servers to a Storage Migrator Server
Storage Migrator Futures • Storage Migrator for UNIX: • Scheduled to release v3.2.5 by EOY • Major performance enhancements when dealing with small files. • Directory Level migrations • Storage Migrator for NT: • Remote Storage Server embedded into W2K • No major revisions due out until next year
FACT • - Business critical data growth is out of control • - Companies require low cost of management - maximum availability of data • - Managing the amount of data being generated is becoming impossible What’s New and Exciting? Data Intensive Application Servers - Platform Independent Lotus Notes SQL SAP/Oracle MS-Exchange Backup Exec or NetBackup
Application Management • First targeted application is Exchange • Preparing to go to Beta with this product: • Majority of space inside the Exchange Information Stores is taken up with message attachments. • No tools exist today to verify this though. • Until now. • Product will allow administrators to move older message to secondary storage. • Administrator defines what attachments to take and when. • Attachments for v1 will only go to tape • v1 is integrated with BENT • Allows sharing of existing hardware between your backup application and this product. • Does not effect users functionality of Exchange/Outlook. • They still see attachments as if they were still their. • Integrity of message text is kept in check.
Two parts to the Puzzle • Utility that interrogates the Information Store. • Public & Private databases • Application that manages this data to make Exchange more manageable
Exchange Analyzer Tool Tool will separate your Exchange databases and gives a breakout of how much space is taken up by attachments and messages.
Exchange Analyzer Tool The tool also breaks out the attachments by size and lets you know how many attachments are how big
Exchange Analyzer Tool The tool also breaks out the attachments by size and lets you know how many attachments are how big and how old.
Exchange Analyzer Tool Finally, a What If analysis allows you to see what effect the Exchange management product will have on your accounts.
Exchange Management • V1 moves older message attachments to secondary storage. • Shares that storage with BENT for v1. (NBU to come in future revs) • Manages the attachments from multiple Exchange servers to one central location. • Allows you to re-locate majority of data that clogs up the information stores on media that you already own/use for your backups. Attachments Backup Data Exchange 5.x Servers
Exchange Storage Management Suite • Version 1 cont. • Users never lose access to their data. • Smaller Information Stores result in quicker backups and recoveries of Exchange data. • All that exists in the message itself is a pointer to the data in storage. (Thus you do not need to recover the entire 20M .ppt file, just the 4k message it was attached to) • Reduce costs on purchase of new and more hard drive space and potential storage subsystems for Exchange. • V1 will work with tape only. • Looking at adding optical, DVD, CD etc. in future revs. • Provides support for Exchange v5.x
What’s in Store for the Future? • Continue with the Storage Migrator products • Updates on UNIX & a Windows 2000 product • Application products will start to become more predominant • Exchange, Notes, Oracle, SQL, Informix, etc…
