WHAT IS VOIP • VoIPrefers to a way to carry phone calls over an IP data network, whether on the Internet or our own internal network.
Basic Working • VoIP technology digitizes analog voice, compresses it, and puts it into packets at the sending end. • Data and voice packets share the same LAN infrastructure. • The receiving end does the reverse.
BENEFITS OF USING VOIP • Bandwidth Efficiency • Soft Switching • Distributed Architecture • Packet Switching • Cost Reduction Transmitting data when the user is quite
Standard Based Platform for Call Control • Soft Switches. • Send messages to the border element with instructions to where to send the call. • Check to see which services the caller is entitled to use. • Communicate with billing system. • Send a message to the network setting up path between caller and end point.
VOIP NETWORK ELEMENTS • SIGTRAN: SIGNALING GATEWAY Translates Signals from Public Switch Network Protocol (SS7) into IP packets and vice versa. • MGC : MEDIA GATEWAY CONTROLLER A soft switch that switches calls between the SG and MG and controlling access from the IP world to/from the PSTN. For example E1 and IP networks. • MG : MEDIA GATEWAY Responsible for packetization of voice traffic and transmitting the traffic towards the destination and vice versa.

Signaling Protocols • SIP (Session Initiating Protocol) • MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol) • H.323 • RTP (Real Time Transport Protocol)
SIGNALING SYSTEM IN A TRADITIONAL PSTN • PSTN ensures automatic signaling system. • Digital signals are used by network switches to establish a communication session. • Modern telephony separately deals the tasks of data transfer and voice signaling.
SIGNALING SYSTEM #7 (SS7) INTRODUCTION • The latest version of Common Channel Signaling. • A worldwide standard for control signaling in Telephone networks. • Packet switched data network. • Facilitates communication within centralized offices as well as long distance switching centers. • An efficient system allowing immense data sending capacity with a high speed.
FEATURES • Call management • Local number portability • Billing mechanisms • Short message service • Voice mail • Credit card validation

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) • INTRODUCTION • Signalingprotocol for controlling communication sessions over IP. • FEATURES • Modifying and tearing down sessions • User registrations • Defining session routing
WAYS OF USING VOIP • PC to PC • PC to Phone • Phone to PC • Phone to Phone
