    2. Objectives Develop an individual’s understanding of the crew pre-mission planning required for NVG operations. Develop an Instructor’s ability to teach required “TACTICAL SAVAGE” Information.

    3. Topics covered General Considerations. Cockpit Teamwork and Considerations. Aircraft Preparation and Equipment. Maps and Visual Aids. General Route and ACP Planning. Aided Night Mission Map Preparation. Aided Night Mission Planning and Briefing. Route Planning Cards.

    4. General Considerations Psychological and Physiological Stress Navigation Radio Communication Battlefield Light Sources Obstructions Terrain Altitude Changes

    5. Cockpit Teamwork and Coordination Critical to successful operations Blind Cockpit Drills In-flight Responsibilities and Duties Standard Crew Terminology In-depth Crew brief Sterile Cockpit

    6. Aircraft Preparation and Equipment Pre-flight during daylight hours Check all lighting prior to mission Check that minimum aircraft required items for NVG operations is operable. Ensure proper supplemental lighting is on board. Goggle operator checks by the book

    7. Aircraft Preparation and Equipment (Cont.) Set OSAP and focus goggles prior to mission For a real tactical mission an extra set of goggles should be on board each aircraft. Extra batteries available Use of handheld LASER’s per SOP

    8. Maps and Visual Aids Maps: VFR Sectional, JOG Air, 1:50,000 Tactical Map Aerial Photographs (S2) Sand Tables and Terrain Boards

    9. General Route and ACP Planning Route Planning Determine mode of flight I.E. NOE, Low Level General Rules for route selection and planning. Select Primary and Alternate routes ACP and Checkpoint Planning SP’s and RP’s: 3-5KM from planned departure or arrival point. Rally Point: Selected by AMC as a point for a flight where they can safely reassemble.

    10. General Route and ACP Planning ACP and Checkpoint Planning (CONT.) ACP’s: Points that define the route, used for heading changes, downed aircraft recovery points, commo requirements, changes of flight formations, or changes of flight modes. CCP’s: Communications Check point. Serial commanders may report to the AMC. CP: Check point that is selected along or adjacent to flight path used to fix aircraft pos.

    11. Aided Night Mission Map Preparation Highlight or outline route and hazards Enter route and ACP first Include map 10-15km on either side Mark lighted towers Avoid map over-preparation Transfer Key Features Avoid exaggeration of map features Orient notes and writing

    12. Aided Night Mission Planning Planning Considerations Checkpoints for day use may not be suitable for NVG use. Much more detailed planning must be accomplished for NVG Operations. Use all methods of navigation: Pilotage, Dead Reckoning, and Electronic-aided Nav during flight.

    13. Aided Night Mission Briefing Briefing Considerations: Per your SOP. SOP should give in-depth considerations of a mission briefing.

    14. Route Planning Cards Route Planning Card Symbols Mission Planning Card Card Doppler/GPS Route Card

    15. Summary General Considerations. Cockpit Teamwork and Considerations. Aircraft Preparation and Equipment. Maps and Visual Aids. General Route and ACP Planning. Aided Night Mission Map Preparation. Aided Night Mission Planning and Briefing. Route Planning Cards.

    16. Conclusion The TC 1-204 and TC 1-212 are not all inclusive. The value of using the experiences of all crewmembers cannot be over emphasized. Meaningful rehearsals (Rock Drills) will also enhance successful completion. Disseminate all pertinent information to every crewmember (don’t forget the CE’s).

    17. Questions? Pessimistic: There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid individual’s who ask questions. Optimistic: The only ignorant question is the question that isn’t asked. Which person are you????? The correct answer for an I.P. is Optimistic. Be approachable!!!!!!!
