The Fred Hollows Foundation -FHF • The long-standing friendship dated back 1992 • Commenced with the amity between Prof. Fred Hollows and Prof.NguyenTrongNhan • First ECCE/IOL courses in 1992 • Working with VNIO to train 322 cataract surgeons all over Viet Nam National Institute Of Ophthalmology

The Fred Hollows Foundation -FHF • In 2000, Dr. SandukRuit, FHF collaborator, introduced the sutureless technique making the cataract surgery more accessible for the poor • 2003, Dr. Phuc came to FHF, started a new stage of activity with comprehensive eye care network on 12 central provinces National Institute Of Ophthalmology

  4. Extensive and profound support in all activities • Hospital management: IT project. Budget: 100,000 USD (2009-2010) • Education and training: "STRENGTHENING CAPACITY OF VNIO project”. Budget: 2,060,000 USD (July 2009 to June 2011). • Technical transfer & supervision: Glaucoma project. Budget: 10,000 USD (2008-2010) National Institute Of Ophthalmology

  5. Total Budget from FHF-AusAid: Supported budget for 5 years (2009-2013): 13,639,323 USD Supported budget in 2013: 2,840,423 USD National Institute Of Ophthalmology

South Australia Institute of Ophthalmology (SAIO) • & Sight For All (SFA) SAIO, affiliated with the University of Adelaide, is a provider of high quality ophthalmic health care, research, education services and health promotion to the people of South Australia. SFA is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness through research, education and infrastructure support. National Institute Of Ophthalmology

South Australia Institute of Ophthalmology (SAIO) • & Sight For All (SFA) • SAIO has established relationship with VNIO for years. • In 11, 2009, Associate Professor Henry Newland and VNIO’s representatives had a meeting with Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, Vice Minister of Ministry of Health. • The meeting was to report to the Vice Minister about the strategy for future cooperation between both sides. • On 27 September 2010, VNIO, as represented by Professor Do Nhu Hon and SAIO, as represented by Associate Professor Henry Newland and SFA entered an MOU marking the concrete cooperation between the two Institutes. The MOU focuses on 4 major items To provide postgraduate education and training by SAIO staff to ophthalmic health professionals in Vietnam; To provide opportunities for Vietnamese ophthalmic health professionals to participate in fellowship training in Australia; To facilitate the establishment of joint programs of clinical research in Vietnam. To facilitate the undertaking of ophthalmic public health projects in Vietnam. National Institute Of Ophthalmology

South Australia Institute of Ophthalmology (SAIO) & Sight For All (SFA) • Over the past 3 years, SAIO and SFA has assigned Australian and Newzeland ophthalmologists in area of Pediatric ophthalmology in 2012, the Oculoplastics in 2013 and the Neuro-Ophthalmology in 2014 to work and provide hand-on training here in the VNIO for VNIO doctors and doctors from central provinces of Vietnam. • Following the program is going on, The SAIO and SFA have sent optometrists to work with doctors, optometrist in the refraction department of VNIO to develop contact lens training.   10. 3/ ICEE (now the ICEE joins the BHVI) The project “Refraction training in the North of Vietnam, 2009-2013” • Long-term Goal: strengthening the human resources in order to develop services and improve eye care quality on refraction, making contribution to reduce blindness rate in Viet Nam. • Short-term Goal: • Strengthening the capacity of eye health professionals through the training courses on refraction for eye doctors and nurses, optomotrists, spectacles technicians, refractive trainers. • Developing the standard curriculum on refraction training. Outcome • 12 assisting Trainers to be trained for the VNIO and ICEE. • 4 spectacles technicians assisting trainers to be trained for the VNIO and ICEE. • 140 refractive officers to be trained in northern provinces. • 56 spectacle technicians to be trained in northern provinces. • 02 optomotrists of VNIO to be trained abroad. Outcome • Developing the standard curriculum on refraction training (content, method, training skills,…) in order to apply for the training in coming time. • Receiving tools, equipment on training refraction from the ICEE to use in long term for refraction training. • Total budget: 244,446 USD National Institute Of Ophthalmology

RANZCO • RANZCO (Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists) is one of organization having relationship with VNIO since 2011. • RANZCO’s mission is to drive improvements in eye health care in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region through continuing exceptional training, education, research and advocacy. RANZCO • In Vietnam, the cooperation between VNIO and RANZCO focus on education and training, for example RANZCO support some fellowship for young ophthalmologist to study in LV Prasad - India, including short time like 3 months, as well as long time like 15 months. • Subspecialty are Cornea, retina, pediatric... The first trip will start at July 2014 for cornea and retina 3 months fellowship. National Institute Of Ophthalmology

RANZCO • In addition that, the other Ranzco's project in Vietnam is going to implement the training for young ophthalmologist in the way of sending volunteer expert selected by RANZCO coming to Vietnam 1 week per month to teach, up to date the knowledge and operate also.
