Key area of concern • Students who are good sport persons at school encouraged to enroll in Fitness, they may not always have the academic level required for success. • Lack of understanding of the degree of science involved in the course • Students struggle when literacy and numeracy issues are carried over from their school life. • Issues with spelling, grammar, critical thinking and problem solving.
Completions project • Fitness traditionally has a low completions rate across the state. • Involved as a case study in the institutes Completions project. • LLN a contributing factor to low completion rates • Computer and technology skills lower than average • Students are on a majority practical hands on learners
Ideas implemented to increase completions • Restructured large exams into smaller quizzes throughout the course. • Students can choosehow they present evidence of knowledge and skills • Joint venture with ABE (High risk of non-completion due to literacy and numeracy issues) • High risk students case worker – Jenny Matthews(Related duties hours) • Students sent formal letters to resit exams or to resubmit assessments in the first week of classes contact their unit teacher for detailed feedback
Fitness & ABE Joint Initiative • Liz Agars HT of ABE and Jenny Matthews teacher of Fitness work together on Monday mornings in a class known as Professional practice. • They have created specific activities to identify writing and comprehension levels of students. An example is a Journal. • Students are also encouraged to discuss their likes and dislikes of the previous weeks classes and activities. To assess language and vocabulary. • Students are encouraged to attend a tutorial session which is held in the library every Tuesday and Wednesday.
