Sigmund Freud The Schlomo
Biography • May 6, 1856 – Sep. 23, 1939 • Born in Moravia, Austrian Empire • Brought up Jewish • Philosopher, Psychiatrist, Neurologist
Education and Influences • Studied medicine at University of Vienna – 9 years • Private practice in neurology, earning M.D. degree in 1881 • Anna Freud, Jacques Lacan, Wilhelm Reich, Karl Marx, Frankfurt School (criticized society and culture)
Philosophy and Ideas • Psychoanalysis • Cocaine • Unconscious mind • Psychosexual development • Id, Ego, and Super-Ego
Psychoanalysis • Bringing repressed thoughts and feelings into consciousness in order to free the patient from suffering repetitive distorted emotions. • He proposed that unconscious memories of infantile sexual abuse were at the root of psychoneuroses • In his studies, he found evidence that repressed thoughts were caused by early sexual abuse that people were unaware of. • The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud
Cocaine • Proponent of cocaine as a stimulant and analgesic • Belief: Cocaine is a cure for many mental and physical problems • He used it himself as an antidepressant • On Coca(1884) – extolled the virtues of coke.
Unconscious Mind • Unconscious mind and understanding conscious thought and behavior • Dreams – the “royal road to the unconscious” (metaphor) • The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) – proposed a method for entering the unconscious • People when in repression, hide painful memories in their unconscious mind • Unaware of buried memories/traumatic experiences
Psychosexual Development • Oedipus complex – emotions and ideas that the mind keeps in the unconscious – that concentrate upon a boy’s desire to sexually possess his mother and kill his father • Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality – people desire incest and must repress the desire • Abandoned seduction theory – childhood sexual abuse causing depression • Adopted Oedipus complex as the primary cause of hysteria and other neurotic symptoms
Theory on Sexual Desire • Three stages of sexual desire • 1. Oral stage – infant’s pleasure in nursing • 2. Anal stage – toddler’s pleasure in evacuating bowels • 3. Phallic stage (age 3-6) – exploring other people’s genitalia, developing curiosity, and understanding the physical difference between male and female. • Then the child focuses on the mother (Oedipus complex) but eventually repressed emotions
The phallus • Phallus – penis • Unconscious desires the phallus • Males afraid of losing phallus to another male • Females always desire phallus (an unfulfillable desire) • So boys resent fathers (castration) and girls desire theirs.
Id, ego, and super-ego • The Ego and the Id (1923) - human psyche divided into 3 parts – id, ego, and superego • Id – impulsive, child-like portion of the psyche; operates on “pleasure principle” • Ego – balance of id and super-ego; desired stage • Super-ego – moral component of the psyche
Famous Quotes • "I found in myself a constant love for my mother, and jealousy of my father. I now consider this to be a universal event in childhood.” • “Just as no one can be forced into belief, so no one can be forced into unbelief.” • “From error to error, one discovers the entire truth.” • The sexual life of adult women is a “dark continent” for psychology.
Why listen to Freud? • Father of psychoanalysis • His concept of the unconscious mind is believed by many in the field • Obtaining access to the “core” (unconscious mind) would lead to countless advancements in understanding • Id, Ego, and Superego complex is observed everyday
Iceberg Metaphor • Explains the psyche’s parts in relation to one another. • 10% of iceberg is visible – conscious mind • 90% is below water (preconscious and unconscious)
