Kinetic Molecular Theory • Gases are hard, spherical particles that: • Have insignificant volume. • Are not attracted to or repelled by each other. • Move randomly in straight paths. • Experience elastic collisions with complete transfer of kinetic energy
Variables that Describe a Gas • The four variables and their common units: 1. pressure (P) in kilopascals - kPa 2. volume (V) in Liters - L 3. temperature (T) in Kelvin - K 4. amount (n) in moles - mol How are each of these variables related to each other?
Boyle’s Law • Pressure goes up, volume goes down; Pressure goes down, volume goes up • Equation: P1V1 = P2V2
Charles’s Law • The volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to the Kelvin temperature, when pressure is held constant.
The Combined Gas Law The combined gas law expresses the relationship between pressure, volume and temperature of a fixed amount of gas.
