  2. High School: It’s all about the credits. • Really! Every credit earned is a step toward graduation. • Every course you take becomes part of your permanent transcript. • If you don’t pass classes and don’t earn credits, you fall behind… • You must meet all graduation requirements to graduate.

  3. What does the Class of 2017 need to do to graduate? HSPE/EOC exams

  4. It all starts in 9th grade…which student will you be?

  5. GPA (Grade Point Average) How’s it calculated? A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0 F = 0.0 So if you have the following semester grades: • Digital Tools B 3.0 • English 9 A 4.0 • Biology C 2.0 • Spanish 1 C 2.0 • World History 9 A 4.0 • Algebra 1 B 3.0 18 / 6 classes = 3.0 Your GPA is 3.0!

  6. What else do you need to do? • Earn 22 credits • Meet State testing requirements • Pass Reading HSPE • Pass Writing HSPE • Pass Biology EOC • Pass Algebra 1 EOC • Pass Geometry EOC • Do a Culminating Project/Senior Project • Develop a High School and Beyond Plan

Did you take high school classes inMiddle School? • These classes are: Algebra, Geometry, STEM, Spanish and French • Your grade and credit will not automatically go on your LHS transcript. • Parents must request it be put on and once it is, it cannot come off! • You can wait until the start of your senior year to request it be put on.

  12. 9th grade technology options: ALL FRESHMEN MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES Digital Tools (Semester) This course provides students with hands-on experience using today’s technology. Topics include Internet use and misuse, digital design, career exploration, and the opportunity to earn industry certification (Microsoft Office Specialist). Prerequisite: None Computer Applications 1 (Semester)* Computer Applications 1 provides instruction and preparation for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in Word and PowerPoint 2010. These certifications allow students to be successful in their academics and in the work place. Prerequisite: Students should have: skills working with computer files; comfort in reading technical material; and experience with Word and PowerPoint applications. Computer Science Principles (Semester)* CSP introduces fundamentals of computer science and computational thinking. Logical reasoning, problem solving, data representation, abstraction, the creation of Web pages and programs, managing complexity, operation of computers and networks, effective Web searching, ethical, legal and social aspects of information technology are covered. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in, or successful completion of, Algebra 1. Intro to Engineering Design (Year)* In this class, students will learn to analyze problems and design potential solutions as scientists and engineers through a series of project-based units and activities. Using powerful 3-dimensional design and modeling software called INVENTOR students will create and model their own inventions and designs. This course is part of the Project Lead the Way Pre-Engineering program and offers college credit. Prerequisite: None * College credit is available for this course.

Elective Options • All the electives that 9th graders may choose are listed on the green registration form. • Pick your elective choices, and number them, in order of preference, from 1 through 4. • You can get additional information on classes by referring to the 9th Grade Elective Options sheet and the online planning guide (course catalog).

  15. Freshman schedule - electives So, you will choose 2 semester-long electives or 1 year-long elective to fill out your schedule. You are ranking them (1 through 4) in your order of preference.

  19. Where to find the LHS Course Planning Guide Go to the LHS website http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/lhs/site/default.asp and click on the “Counseling” tab. http://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/lhs/site/default.asp Then select LHS Course Planning Guide.

  20. A tip for finding information: When the Planning Guide opens, find what you are looking for by using the “Search” or “Find” function of your browser.

  21. For example, to find information on the course Graphic Arts 1, type it in and hit “search.”

  22. All instances of Graphic Arts 1 appear and you can click on each item. Notice the first one takes you to the LHS Course Summary.

  24. Using the LHS Course Planning Guide The LHS Course Summary (page 18) provides a quick reference to course offerings. This is only a guide---read the full course description completely before you choose a course! Department course is under Course number - pay attention to 3 digits! Year (Y) or Semester (S) - In the library, enter both course numbers for year courses
