Dual Enrollment • Offered through agreements with Piedmont Virginia Community College • Taught at the college freshman level using PVCC curriculum and texts • Earn credits that may be transferred to community colleges and in-state four-year colleges and universities
Advanced Placement (AP) • Designed for highly motivated students who desire the challenge of college-level work in high school • Expected to take the AP exam in May • College credits earned depending on student’s score and individual policies of college/university
Honors Enrollment at CHS • Designed for students who are academically motivated, have demonstrated high levels of achievement, and are prepared for advanced work • Serve as precursor to Advanced Placement (AP) courses
Honors Enrollment at Buford Middle • Designed for students who are academically motivated, have demonstrated high levels of achievement, and are prepared for advanced work • Afford students opportunity to earn high school credits (although not all honors courses earn high school credit) • Serve as precursor to Advanced Placement (AP) courses
Rising 9th Graders w/ 2 or More Credits From Buford Middle • Focus on increasing credits for rising 9th graders • Increase number of students with at least one credit • “Ninth-graders who are placed in higher-level courses have a lower failure rate than students with similar characteristics who are placed in lower-level courses” (Cooney and Bottoms in Making Middle Grades Work , SREB, 2008).
Buford Middle Credit Earning Courses • Algebra I • Family/Consumer 8 • French I • Geometry • Keyboarding • Spanish I
WALK Enrollment • Students who aren’t successfully passing one or more classes • Seniors who are missing credits needed for graduation • Students who are in danger of dropping out • Students with health or trauma issues that jeopardize their success in a traditional classroom • Transfer students who need to meet Virginia requirements • 2011-12 enrollment numbers are as of January 4, 2012

AVID Enrollment • In-school college preparatory program for students in the “middle” with a desire to attend college • Began with 7th – 11th graders in 2010-11 • Extended to 6th & 12th graders in 2011-12 • Largest increase in enrollment in 2011-12 is in the 9th grade
