BUSI 4200Rhino Case Group 74 Mitch Jones, Andrew Joyner, Peter Lindholm, Evan Price, Josh Scott October 2, 2012
Order of Events • Introduction • Define the problems • Establish Criteria for Decision • Collect and Analyze Data • Identify Solutions and Shareholders • Defend and Implement Solutions • Evaluate, Review, Revise • Conclusion
Establish the Decision Criteria • Determine the main objective of Kruger National Park. • Priority: High • Population control, broadening of the range for populations, spreading the risk of managing wildlife, making the populations more resilient and viable, and fund-raising for specific conservation and land expansion programs • What makes a poacher want to illegally hunt rhinos? • Priority: Medium • How much does selling a rhino or allowing a rhino hunt help out the park financially? With population control? • Priority: High • How can the park combat poachers to reduce the amount of illegally killed rhinos? • Priority: Medium
Establish the Decision Criteria • How much can a rhino be sold for to private parties? How much can the horn be sold for? • Priority: Medium • How could the park improve its other tourist attractions to help improve fund raising efforts? • Priority: Low • For the companies that KNP sells the rhinos to, what are their motives behind using the rhinos? • Priority: Medium
Identify Solutions and Shareholders • Kruger Nation Park not being able to completely cover cost with the revenue that they received from operating the park • Tourist attraction • 21 rest camps, 7 private lodge concessions, and their 11 private safari lodges • There are not always good intentions of the people who purchase the rhinos from Kruger Nation Park • Ulterior motives for the rhinos • Extensive background checks on the potential buyers
Identify Solutions and Shareholders • There are poachers that roam South Africa in search for rhinos to kill and take their horns • Due to the rapidly increasing demand of markets in Asia and India. • Increase the amount of budget that is designated towards the SANParksEnvironmental Crimes Unit and the South African Police • Give them sentence time and make them pay double of what a horn costs on the black market
Defend and Implement Solutions • Establish Task Force Team to investigate rhino buyers • Charge fee during purchase to cover cost of team • Probationary period for buyers after sale • Hire previous military, and law enforcement • Knowledge of country and problem
Defend and Implement Solutions cont. • More efficient way of matching revenues and expenses • More attractions within park • Market existing attractions more • Perform study to see what citizens are willing to pay • Adjust prices according to study
Defend and Implement Solutions cont. • High Cost of rhino hunting trip • Government charge tax on trips • Earmark the tax revenue for use in park • Use for care and upkeep of park
