Why We Like iMovie Pt. 3Changing the Traditional Oral/Written Report
Impact on GACS Classrooms • Students develop research, writing, and creative skills in a collaborative environment • Engagement with the social studies in a History Channel/YouTube era • Encourages storytelling, reporting, role playing, etc. • Applicable across curricula and at multiple age levels
Implementation Pt. 1: Instructions • Clarity, Clarity, Clarity! • Written and Oral • Additional Classtime for Most Significant Items • Reliance on Student Intuition For Learning Technology • Should Students Appear on Screen?
Implementation Pt. 2: Mechanisms for Evaluation • Combination of rubric and evaluation sheet for us • Rubistar is AWESOME! • Publish digitally for student and parent viewing
Problems We Experienced • Giving Appropriate Credit to Sources --> New Schoolwide Plagiarism Policy • Division of Labor within Groups • Student Cramming --> Need for Multiple Deadlines
How Can You Use iMovie in Your Classroom? • Think-Pair-Share • Large Group Discussion
Create Your Own iMovie • Pick a Topic You Enjoy Studying • Write a Paragraph About It, Thinking of Words/Expressions that Would Go Well with Images • Find Images--Use Safari for Easier Importing to iPhoto • Put Images in Correct Order According to Script • Record Voiceover • Short Experiments: Do Within iMovie as Pictures Change • Actual Projects: Record in QuickTime or Garage Band, send to iTunes, adjust images to fit appropriate amount of time • Adjust Images to Fit with Desired Length of Time on Screen • Add Text to Images if Desired • Add Music from iTunes or Sound Effects • Play Your Creation!
