  5. Juniors • This classification is for junior high and high school students. This is where the student learns the fundamentals of rowing: • Working together • Balance, good core • Proper stroke technique • Strength Development • Once this is somewhat mastered, competition might be introduced.

  6. Collegiate • Collegiate rowing is highly competitive. There are different levels depending on the school classification i.e. D-1, D-2, D-3, or Club. Races are also classified as men or women. There are no competitive mixed boats.

  7. Olympic • Olympic rowing draws from athletes across the country. Many have not rowed together but exhibit complementary skills that allow the Olympic coaches to put highly competitive boats together. This evens the playing field somewhat among college athletes in that it doesn’t matter if you are with a club team or from a D-1 school.

  8. Recreation • Rowing can be a lifelong sport. It gives the individual a great workout, provides for teamwork, and promotes sociability. Adult athletes can be as competitive as they like. They can row for fun and fitness, or they can join a Masters group and row competitively.
