  2. CM Awareness Training • Who in your organization needs to know about Configuration Management? • Why should they know about CM? • How well do these workers understand Configuration Management? How do you know? • What is the impact of lack of CM knowledge at the working level on your operations? • What should they know? • What does ANSI/NIRMA CM 1.0-2000 say about CM training? • What are some possible solutions to improving worker CM knowledge?

  3. CM Awareness Training • Who needs to understand CM? • Workers in all parts of a nuclear facility (its not just for engineers!!!) • Operations • Maintenance • Engineering • Training • Managers/ Supervisors/ Individual contributors • Others?

CM Awareness Training • Why do all these people need to know?To ensure that plant personnel: • protect the plant’s design basis through effective engineering, plant operations, and SSC maintenance (maintaining CM equilibrium). • understand the importance of operating the plant’s SSCs within their established margins. • recognize the need to maintain plant equipment to be capable of meeting their design requirements. • recognize what constitutes an unauthorized modification to the plant to avoid compromising the plant design. • understand how to establish the quality of facility configuration information they are using to perform tasks.

  5. CM Awareness Training • How well do the workers in your organization understand Configuration Management? How do you know? • Monitor Condition Report system for events caused by lack of worker CM knowledge and/or sensitivity to program requirements. • Conduct surveys to understand worker current knowledge of CM. • Perform self-assessments of targeted areas of the CM program to look for weaknesses.

CM Awareness Training • Consequences of lack of worker knowledge of CM • Plant design is compromised through unauthorized changes to SCCs • Configuration controlled FCI is not updated • SSCs are challenged by improper operation outside of established margins. • Equipment is not restored to meet design requirements after maintenance and cannot performed its function as designed. • Increased risk of human performance error from workers using information to perform work that is not configuration controlled.

  7. CM Awareness Training • What is it about CM that workers need to know? • The “Big Picture” of CM. Basic understanding of the principles of CM (“CM 101”) • CM equilibrium (the “3 ball model”) • Understand what each element of the model represents • Understand FCI and how its controlled and how to tell if its accurate. • Understand how and why their work impacts the CM program • Know how specific daily actions they may take would impact CM. • Understand how and why the CM program contributes to their performance of specific work.

ANSI/NIRMA CM 1.0 2000 on CM Training • CM Training Objective • Provide adequate assurance that facility personnel are aware of the configuration management concepts, terminology, definitions and procedures. • Ensure that workers have an understanding of how their actions impact station CM • Ensure that workers are able to properly carry out their work in a way that helps the organization achieve the configuration management objectives.

ANSI/NIRMA CM 1.0 2000 on CM Training • CM Training Content- • Overview configuration management training should explain the configuration management objectives and how the facility is achieving the criteria of this standard. • Overview training should also help facility personnel understand the linkage between design requirements and operating and maintenance requirements.

ANSI/NIRMA CM 1.0 2000 on CM Training • Specialized training: • More detailed and task specific training is appropriate for people who are directly involved in program management, establishing and maintaining design requirements, FCI, or change control tracking, assessments or implementing design requirements during facility operation or maintenance.
