  1. HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY/CIVICSA 2 hour (+10mins) combined paper Geography • Requires you to use 1 hour of the 2 hours available as working time for the combined History/Geography/Civics test

  2. PART A WORTH 20% of the combined paper • 20 multiple choice questions, based on skills and stimulus material. • Your answers are indicated on a separate answer sheet Skills list available on the Board of Studies website, Geography syllabus p18 and 19

  3. Skills tested in Part A • use various types of maps and flow charts • locate features using degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude • calculate the area of a feature • calculate the density of a feature • measure bearings on a map • calculate local relief • identify the aspect of a slope • construct a cross-section • calculate the gradient of a slope • construct a transect • construct a land-use map • describe and explain relationships on maps • read and interpret synoptic charts • distinguish between large-scale and small-scale maps

And More Skills (Part A) • Fieldwork - develop a research action plan • Use fieldwork techniques to collect primary and secondary data • Graphs and Statistics -construct and interpret population pyramids • construct and interpret divided bar and column graphs, and composite line graphs • recognise and account for change using statistical data • Photographs-interpret satellite images • Collect and use digital images • Note: When using geographical tools teachers could also use geographical information systems (GIS) as appropriate to support student learning in Geography • THESE SKILLS ARE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE B.O.S SYLLABUS p19

  5. SKILLS • These skills have been included in your Homework booklets, and should be completed as directed by your teacher. • There are practice skills questions on the B of S website. Answers to these questions are also available on the website. • There is a multiple choice generator on the B of S website, under HSC and SC Test yourself.

  6. PART B Written responses (30% combined marks) Written responses as • (3)* Short responses worth 15% of the combined mark (*sometimes with 2 or more parts to the question). Use ALL the lines provided • 1 Extended response also worth 15% of the combined mark. Use All the lines provided.

  7. Equipment Needed • Black pens • Pencils and eraser • A ruler marked in mms and cms • Highlighter (optional) • A calculator • A pair of compasses • A protractor • A set square

  8. How to Get the Most from the SC • Good preparation means you can be relaxed • Prior study- throughout the time available from now to the exam • Good sleep patterns • Good eating habits • Arrive at the exam centre with plenty of time - no last minute rush
