Jesus Turns Water Into Wine Prelude to the miracle (John 2:1-5) • Jesus had called several of His disciples on two previous days (John 2:1; 1:29, 40-42) • Mary, Jesus & His disciples are invited to a wedding feast in Cana. • Mary informs Jesus, “They have no wine.” • Note the confidence of Mary in her Son’s ability to help (John 2:3, 5; cf. Luke 2:19, 51) • Jesus gently rebukes Mary because His hour had not yet come; His work was on His heavenly Father’s timetable. (John 7:30; 8:20; 12:23, 27; 13:1; 17:1)
Jesus Turns Water Into Wine Particulars of the Miracle (John 2:6-10) • Six water pots of stone (each holding 20 to 30 gallons – a total of approximately 150 gallons) • The SERVANTS handled the water pots • FILLED the pots to the brim • Drew out some and took it to the Master of the Feast • The assessment of the Master of the Feast • He did not know where the wine came from. • He judged it to be BETTER than the wine set out at the first of the feast.
Jesus Turns Water Into Wine • Purpose of the Miracle (John 2:11) • Jesus manifested His glory. • His DISCIPLES believed. • Applications for us • Jesus can provide for our needs even when we have used up all our resources. • Jesus can change something that is common into something extraordinary! • He can change people with the POWER of the Gospel! (Rom. 1:16) • Like He changed the Corinthians, the Thessalonians and Saul of Tarsus
Jesus Turns Water Into Wine Does this miracle justify social drinking? • “Wine” can be either fermented or unfermented (Isaiah 65:8; Matthew 9:17; Revelation 19:15) • The word “winepress” in Revelation 19:15 is translated from the phrase “τὴν ληνὸν του οἴνου” which literally means “the press of the wine” • The picture shows a wine press found in the Israel. It illustrates what Jesus described in Matt. 21:33 when He said that a land owner “dug a winepress”
Jesus Turns Water Into Wine Does this miracle justify social drinking? • Jesus lived undera law that forbade giving intoxicating wine to your neighbor (Habakkuk 2:15) or even looking at wine swirling in the cup (Proverbs 23:29-34) • Jesus made a law that forbade both drinking AND drunkenness (1 Peter 4:3; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10) • WOULD Jesus have made 150 gallons MORE of intoxicating wine to give to those who had already “well drunk”? (cf. John 2:10)
