2. Independent & • Dependent Clauses An independent clausecontains a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. A dependent clausecontains a subject and a verb, but no complete thought.

3. The Compound Sentence • A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by: • a coordinating conjunction(for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), • B. a conjunctive adverb(e.g. however, therefore), or • C. asemicolonalone.

5. The Complex Sentence • A Complex Sentence has one dependent clause joined to an independent clause. • Complex sentences utilize the following conjunctions: after, although, because, before, until, since, when, whenever, while.

6. Complex Sentences A complex sentence contains at least one independent clause and one dependent clause. Dependent clause = A clause that cannot form its own sentence because alone it would not make sense; there must be an independent clause for it to modify. EX. When he hit the ball over the fence, the boy made a home run. Instructions: copy the the following sentences:circle the dependent clause and underline the independent clause. 1. John cannot set up his typewriter because the wall has no outlet. 2. She will go to school in the city until she finds a job.
