Guided Reading • Guided reading is a strategy that helps students become good readers • The teacher provides support for small groups of readers as they learn to use various reading strategies (context clues, letter and sound relationships, word structure, and so forth) • Guided Reading is given 4 times a week
The Structure of a Guided Reading Lesson. • Small Groups (usually 4-6 students) • The teacher sits with one group. If available a Teaching Assistant takes another group. • Usually (depending on the level of reading) there are warm-up activities eg phonic work, sentence structures, flashcards • Before Reading Activities, During Reading Activities, After Reading Activities
Before Reading Activities Look closely at the cover. What do you see? What do you think the story is going to be about? Why is the dog called bear? What do you know about bears? Who do you think is going to be the main character? What do you know about dogs as pets?
