  3. DIABETES PREVENTION • A logical response to the current situation • Diabetes is a costly disease of many complications • Health resources are scarce particularly in countries with high prevalence of diabetes • Cooperation and collaboration are a must for prevention programs to work

  6. PSEM ADVOCACY PROGRAMS • Goals • To raise public awareness about common endocrine problems, particularly diabetes mellitus and thyroid diseases among others • To promote public health strategies aimed at early diagnosis and treatment and importantly, prevention of these diseases

PSEM ADVOCACY PROGRAMS • Lay lectures in different areas of the Philippines, simultaneously with continuing education workshops for physicians and other health care professionals • Screening programs for diabetes mellitus, obesity, thyroid disorders • Publication of patient educational brochures distributed to patients/the public for free • Partnership with the media in dissemination of endocrine-related issues

LIGA NG MGA BARANGAY SA PILIPINAS • Represents the 42,000 barangay units throughout the country • Organized into 120 chapters with functions and responsibilities in 8 key service areas in the community: • HEALTH CARE & WELL-BEING, food security, water and environmental protection, shelter, livelihood, peace and order, education and literacy, participation in governance

LIGA NG MGA BARANGAY SA PILIPINAS • BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS (BHWs) • Community volunteers in their specific barangays/communities tasked to carry out health programs through the barangay health units • Represent an organization of individuals already involved in primary health care at the most basic level • A pool of health advocates who can be trained on diabetes screening and prevention

  15. “HAWAK KAMAY LABAN SA DIABETES”PSEM Diabetes Advocacy 2007 • PSEM DIABETES WARRIOR PROGRAM • Main Objective • To promote diabetes awareness and prevention at the community level through the barangay, the basic political unit in Philippine society • Specific Objective • To implement a long-term, self sustaining diabetes prevention program involving grassroots health workers, the Barangay Health Workers

PSEM DIABETES WARRIOR PROGRAM“Hawak Kamay Laban sa Diabetes” • Terms of Collaboration • PSEM: • Provide logistics for diabetes screening and prevention modules to be cascaded • Supervise training and certification of the BHWs on these modules • Obtain funding and support for the activities of the program • Provide system of patient registry and patient referral

PSEM DIABETES WARRIOR PROGRAM“Hawak Kamay Laban sa Diabetes” • Terms of Collaboration • LIGA NG MGA BARANGAY (BHWs) • Will be responsible for cascading the module from the national to regional to provincial to city/municipal to barangay level • each BHW will be competent to perform screening and prevention activities in their respective barangay unit • Undergo training and recertification on the said module • Maintain an updated log of patients seen as part of the program • Provide periodic monitoring report and feedback

PSEM DIABETES WARRIOR PROGRAM“Hawak Kamay Laban sa Diabetes” • Expected Outcomes of Partnership • Identification of individuals at high risk of developing diabetes and those who already have diabetes • Early intervention for these identified individuals and potential delay and/or prevention of diabetes mellitus • A veritable source of information that can be utilized for translational research on diabetes prevention

PSEM DIABETES WARRIOR PROGRAM“Hawak Kamay Laban sa Diabetes” • FUTURE DIRECTIONS • Team up with other health organizations and agencies • Continued partnership with PDA, ISDF, PCDE and cooperation with PMA, PCP • Communication with AMHOP and IMAP in progress • Enhance international alliances with IDF, ISE, AFES • Seek actively sources of funding locally and internationally • Plan on computerization of patient registry • Reevaluate program regularly
