Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball.
Initial data collection • Subjective work sheet • Game analysis observation schedule • Video analysis • It is important to be able to describe this process and why methods are valid and reliable.
Subjective worksheet • 2 sets against opponents of equal ability (4-aside) • At the end of the sets our team sat down and discussed our performance under three main headings • Service reception • Transition to attack and attack play • Court coverage and defence • Here we wrote down our strengths and weaknesses in each area.
Game analysis os • This schedule highlighted the main ways points could be won in volleyball • Whilst I played 2 sets against opponent of equal ability an observer sat and marked down each time a point was won with an X in the appropriate category.
What were these categories? • Service • Opponent error • Block • 1st attack • Transition to attack • Opponent service
Appropriate and reliable • Subjective data collection allowed our team to reflect on our own game play however not concrete evidence and based on own interpretation • GAOS identified strengths and weaknesses in individuals and units in the game reinforcing subjective data collection • Written evidence which could be looked at time and time again • Could be converted to statistics hard to argue with • Objective feedback more reliable non bias • Game duration gave enough information • Opposition provided a realistic setting • Video analysis reinforced GAOS plus could be slowed down or paused to look in more detail at specific aspects of play. Good for comparison
What are your teams main strengths? • 2 tall powerful hitters • Can adjust run up at the last minute to change direction of hit • Fast explosive arm action getting over the ball to bring it down quick • Frequently change the tempo of the game by using both tips and spikes to pressurise opposition defence making attacking play less predictable • Tactically aware of opposition weaknesses targeting these players with the attacking ball. • Able to time run and move in as a unit playing fake hits to add an element of surprise • Read game and can target unprotected space
What is your main weakness when applying the 1.2.1 structure? • Weak receiver (impact on 1st attack, what is wrong with 1st touch?) • What do opposition do? • What are the players technical limitations and impact on skill? • What are the physical limitations and impact on skill? • What are the tactical limitations and impact on skill? • How is the setter affected? • How are the swing hitters affected?
Service reception Observation Schedule Played 2 sets against an opponent of equal ability (up to 25 points) • Observer recorded each players’ service reception • 3 = perfect pass, high and accurate to the setter • 2 = setter options limited • 1 = setter has no options • 0 = direct error • An x was also placed on a scatter graph to demonstrate where the first touch was played to and whether it was high or low
Several players ineffective in the setting role Technical weaknesses Tactical weaknesses Physical weaknesses Impact on hitters Overall impact What is your main weakness when applying the 3 touch attacking strategy.
Setting Observation Schedule Played 2 sets against an opponent of equal ability (up to 25 points) • + = perfect set • 0 = Rally continues • - = Direct error • An x was also placed on a scatter graph to demonstrate where the set was played to and whether it was high or low
Why appropriate and reliable? • By using focussed data collection and video analysis you are able to identify where the structure or strategy is falling down. • Gives you a visual picture of your faults • Identifies if one player is able to fulfil their role due to TTP limitations. • Collecting data prevents you practicing to improve the wrong aspect of the game firmly focussing on weaknesses • Identifies if all players understand their roles and responsibilities • When in pressurised situations, most players skills’ break down therefore it is important to collect data in this situation • Acts as a method of monitoring
