The Children’s Famine Children are suffering in the Horn of Africa UNICEF is working hard to help save the lives of these children
The Horn of Africa In the news we have heard a lot about the Horn of Africa and the Children’s Famine. Do you know where the Horn of Africa is? Do you know which countries make up the Horn of Africa?
What has caused the famine? There are three main reasons why the famine has occurred. • Drought– there has been no decent rainfall for over 2 years. • Conflict – there has not been a stable government in Somalia since 1991. • Rising food prices – because of the scarcity of food and the unstable environment, some staple food items such as maize, have risen by 240%.
UNICEF’s Famine Response Famine was officially declared in the Horn of Africa by the United Nations on the 20th July, 2011.
Refugees 2 million Somalian families have left their homes in search of food, shelter and safety. There are 507,000 refugees in the Kenyan refugee camps which are originally designed to house 90,000 people.
UNICEF’s Famine Response UNICEF has been quick to act to save the lives of the most vulnerable We have provided: • 1600 metric tonnes of aid in August alone. • Therapeutic foods to malnourished children. • Blanket feeding for families in Kenya and Somalia to prevent acute malnutrition. • We aim to immunise 10 million against measles. • We are targeting 4 million people with water and sanitation services. • We are providing insecticide treated nets for children at risk of contracting malaria. • With partners we have set up outpatient health clinics to treat mothers and children affected by the famine.
Aid Flights into Mogadishu UNICEF chartered a plane to bring in 4200 metric tonnes of urgently needed aid supplies. We delivered: • 490 tonnes of therapeutic food • Corn-soya blend rice • Measles vaccines • Clean water kits
Meet Nayle from Ethiopia She is 10 months old and is the youngest of 10 children. On the 11th of July, 2011, Nayle began attending the community-based outpatient therapeutic feeding programme in Belina Arba Village, Ethiopia. When Nayle first attended the clinic she weighed only 4.8 kgs. She is among 41 children being treated for acute malnutrition at the centre. The good news is that Nayle’s weight is improving thanks to the UNICEF supported weekly programme.
