Frequently Asked Questions • What Class Should I Sign Up For? • All Freshman Brass, Woodwinds & Percussion sign up for Intermediate Band A & B. • All Freshman Color Guard Members sign up for Color Guard A & B. • Should an advanced 9th Grader Sign up for an Intermediate or Adv. course? • Intermediate: All 9th and 10th Graders are automatically in the Int. Ensemble. The UC and Cal St. Universities want to see the students in a progression of courses over their high school career. • Can a freshman be in the Jazz Ensemble? • Yes. Each Member of the Spirit Band has the opportunity to be in the Jazz Ensemble through their Spring Audition. Successful auditions candidates will receive an invitation to be in the Jazz Band.
Frequently Asked Questions • What is the Rehearsal Schedule for Marching Band? • Marching Band truly is the “Sport of the Arts.” Like all of our sports teams, it requires after school hours practice time, and commitment to the weekend Competitions. Unlike our sports teams, however, you will not be sitting on the bench. You are a starter. All starters must practice & perform as a starter. If you & your family can not commit to the practice & performance schedule it is recommended that you audition for other groups (e.g. Jazz Ensemble). • M/W/F (6-9 PM); Friday Football Games & Saturday Competitions • Do members need to be at Band Camps? • Yes. It is expected that every member of the team will be involved critical time of learning. • 90% of the members who arrive to campus late, or do not attend band camp, are overwhelmed with getting “caught up” with the rest of the group, and can’t catch up.
Frequently Asked Questions • Can I fit Band in my schedule? • Yes. Band & Guard members are given a great opportunity to take 7 courses (the normal school day only has 6 courses) so you can fit in Band. Not only that, you are given PE Credit your sophomore and Jr. Year for the Marching Band (Fall Semester)! • Note: Because you are given the opportunity to take 7 classes, most band students opt to have a standard grade • (A, B, C, etc..) in their Freshman & Sophomore Year. In their Jr. & Sr. Year when they are taking weighted classes • (AP & IB) they opt to have band count as a “Pass/Fail” grading option. This option keeps the music course on their transcript, but does not lower their overall GPA. • Check us out on You Tube and “Like us” on Facebook • http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Spirit+of+Great+Oak&oq=The+Spirit+of+Great+Oak&gs_l=youtube.3..0.1656.6032.0.6473.23.12.0.10.10.0.80.721.12.12.0...0.0...1ac.1.B2E65toGA2g • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY-LOA97P5c
