INTRODUCTION • Membership fees are our main source of income, supported by the animal adoption scheme and donations. • We have developed a database of endangered species – this can be downloaded by members. • Members may choose any animal in the database and adopt it by completing an application form and paying a fee. • In return they are sent an adoption certificate and a bookmark plus regular updates throughout the year.
FACTS ABOUT ENDANGERED SPECIES • Did you know? • Since 1500, over 800 species of plants and animals have gone extinct! • Humans have caused the extinction of many animals throughout history, e.g. moa birds in Malaysia and giant lemurs in Madagascar. • 1,170 animals species worldwide are endangered, half of which reside in the US. • “…the extinction of even a single species may result in the disappearance of up to 30 other species of plants and wildlife” – USDA Forest Service Thanks to humans, I live no MOA! We Polar Bears are going extinct, too!
THREATS TO ENDANGERED SPECIES • The four main threats to animals are: • Climate change -Human activities (e.g. burning fossil fuels) have changed the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in global climate changes. • Loss of habitat -Humans destroy animal habitats so they can use the land for agriculture, development of towns and cities, etc. • Hunting - Endangered species are targeted for their value on illegal markets, e.g. the ‘Pig Nosed Turtle’ is hunted because of its unusually shaped nose!) . • Predators – In the wild, prey animals are at risk from being killed by predators, which are stronger and better adapted to their environment.
