After viewing, you’ll be: • Familiar with who I am and my background • Able to identify my expectations from you as far as class work, homework and late work • Aware of my grading policy • Introduced to the communication outlets that I have set in place • Familiar with the classroom surroundings and where things are • Aware of where we are currently at according to the State standards and my timeline
Me • 18th year here at Eich • Dept. Head for Social Studies • Washington DC advisor • Grew up in Vacaville (mom still lives there) • Married past 21 years, wife is Kristy Ruhkala (kept her maiden name) • Three boys, Chase 17 OHS, Kody 14 OHS Riley 10, Quail glen elementary • Absolutely love my job • Football … go Cowboys • Graduated from Sac State • Started at Chico then San Diego • Spent a year in London and traveled throughout Europe • Love the outdoors… as well as lounging watching football
About the class: • Understanding the importance of history
About the class: • Learning variety of cultures and societies…. How they developed and what lasting influence do they have on the world today.
Interesting topics… controversial / debates… have an open mind. • A variety of teaching methods. Projects, tests, group work, peer presentations just a few. • Should come away with a better understanding of World History.
Class expectations • Respect • Lighten up, have fun but yet, stay focused • Homework is given about 2x per week • Communication is essential for both of us • Don’t be late…. In desk by bell • Be prepared… don’t ask me for supplies • I dismiss you, not the bell.
Consequences • 1st Warning … can be a simple stare, name mentioned -- subtle hint. • 2nd After class chat. Take time away from your precious 3 minute passing period. • 3rd Lunch detention. You take time away from my class, I take time away from yours. • 4th Referral / Detention. Do I need to go here? • Parent contact will be made after 3rd consequence
Homework • 2 to 3x per week • Almost never on weekends • Late work • Half credit – all work must be turned in for extra credit opportunity Homework will be listed in red on the board each week (HW). It will also be posted on the web site each Friday pm for the following week.
Grading Policy • Standard based report card • 100% - 90% A Excelled standard • 89% - 80% B Proficient on standard • 79% - 70% C Met standard • 69% - 60% D Below standard • 59% & below F Far below standard
Classroom surroundings • Grades posted every Monday. No guess work where you stand. • 8th grade projects to the left and 7th grade to the right. • By the wall are the baskets in which graded work will be placed as well as a no - name box. • There will also be containers there with two weeks of past assignments in case you’re missing work.

Supplies • Spiral notebook for interactive notebooks (will need 1 for each trimester – total of 3) • Highlighter • Pen / pencil • USB Flash drive • Colored markers or pencils • Glue sticks • Scissors • Ruler • Binder paper
