  2. Overview / Facts • Men thought the world was flat • Men believed the seas were full of monsters • Chinese invented the compass • Sailors went MONTHS without fresh food (*This caused a disease called scurvy.) • Sailors died of scurvy • Crew members planned to kill the captains of their ships (* This was called mutiny)

  3. Why did these men want to explore? • Wanted to spread Christianity (religion) • Wanted to expand their own country by owning new lands • Wanted to trade with other countries

  4. Christopher Columbus • Born in 1451, in Italy • Sailed when he was only 14 • Drew and sold maps to make money • Moved to Spain in 1485 • His crew was made up of all types of people (Translators, 3 doctors, servants for the captains, secretaries and an accountant)

  5. Christopher Columbus • He decided to sail WEST to find a short cut to the Indies • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (King and Queen of Spain) paid (funded) his trip • He left Spain in 1492 with 89 men and three ships (Can you name all three???) • October 11, 1942 he came upon an island. He thought he was in the Indies, but actually he landed off the coast of the Bahamas

  6. Ponce de Leon • He was a Spanish explorer • Born in Spain in 1460 • Sailed with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage • He was asked to find an island in the Bahamas called Bimini • In Bimini he wanted to find the fountain of youth • Legend has it that anyone who drank from the fountain of youth would never get old

  7. Ponce de Leon • He organized a voyage to search for the fountain in March of 1513 • He landed near the site of what is now St. Augustine, Florida • He did not realize that he had landed in North America • He thought he landed on an island • He named this land Florida because he saw lots of flowers • Florida in Spanish means “Flowery” • He was the FIRST European to explore Florida and did not know it! • He claimed the land he found for the King of Spain

  8. Ponce de Leon • He sailed through the Florida keys, with no luck of finding the fountain of youth, he finally returned to Spain • After 5 years, he sailed back in 1521 with 2 ships and 200 men • They landed off the west coast of Florida • When they went ashore, they were met by a large group of Native Americans who were shooting arrows at them • An arrow hit Ponce de Leon • He died in July of 1521 from his wounds

  9. Vasco Nunez de Balboa • Was a Spanish explorer • In 1500 Balboa sailed from Spain to Columbia, South America • He was looking for pearls and gold • In 1510 in attempt to find gold he set off on another expedition. He stowed away in a boat from Santo Domingo to San Sebastian • When they reached San Sebastian, they discovered that it had been burned to the ground • Balboa convinced the men to sail southwest to a spot where he has seen on his earlier expedition

  10. Vasco Nunez de Balboa • In 1511, Balboa founded a colony, the first European settlement in South America • The town was called Santa Maria de la Antigua del Darien • In 1513, he sailed with hundreds of Spaniards and Indians across the Gulf of Uraba to the Darien Peninsula • Balboa headed an overland expedition west through very dense rainforests. Along the way they fought many local Indians and destroyed one Indian village, killing hundreds of Indians.

  11. Vasco Nunez de Balboa • Balboa was the first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean (in September 1513, from a peak in Darién, Panama). • Balboa and his men then traveled to the ocean and claimed it and all the land that touched it for Spain. They spent about a month conquering Natives along the Pacific coast and stealing their gold. • Balboa was charged with treason( an activity lead directly to overthrow the government or carrying out a threat to a major state figure such as a member of the royal family or a President. ) against Spain • Balboa was found guilty and was publicly beheaded in Acla in January, 1519.

  12. Henry Hudson Facts • His ship was named the Half Moon • Hired by the Dutch East India Trading Company • If Hudson could find a short cut to Asia, the company believed they would make more money • Although Hudson failed at his mission, his reports of fur trading opportunities inspired merchants • About 15 years later, the company sent 30 families to North America as colonists and workers • They called the colony New Amsterdam, later renamed New York
