  20. A group of Dutch merchants formed the Dutch West India Company in order to trade across to America. (Dutch people come from the Netherlands! Where did these colonists come from?

  21. One of their main stopping points was New Amsterdam which is located on Manhattan Island (New York) • The Dutch West India Company sent families to America to work the land • Anyone who could get 50 people to go would get a LARGE plot of land!

Larger crop lands than New England • They grew mostly wheat • And Cash Crops- crops that can be sold easily Farmers sent cargoes of livestock and wheat to New York City and Philadelphia who then shipped them overseas NYC and Philadelphia then became largest cities due to being major trading centers Economy

  24. The Middle colonies were very diverse! • Many people came from Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, France and Scotland Because of a diversity of people, people were more tolerant of religious and cultural differences People
