  4. Glasnost • Glasnost = transparency • Creation of a liberal newspaper in USSR • The Chernobyl nuclear accident

Perestroika • Problems of the USSR • economic stagnation • industry was backlog • Gorbachev allowed private business • GNP lost 20% between 1988 and 1991 • Nonsuccess of Perestroika • alcoholism at work • fake propaganda • did not trust this new policy • The government tried to enforce prohibition but that caused the rise of mafia

  6. Failure of the USSR during the 80’s • Oil crisis • 1980’s the cost of oil increase by 50%, also the USSR could not respond to the price • War in Afghanistan • Mujahedeen supported by the USA beat the USSR army after 10 years of war. • War in Afghanistan was like the Vietnam for the US

  7. Conclusion: • The US effect to weaken the USSR international policy and by do a strategy of making new technology. But for me it still Gorbachev's policy which still the main effect of the fall of the USSR
