  6. Discussion Today you will be participating in what is called the Structured Academic Controversy model. It is a means of reaching a consensus. There is no winner or loser. “Was the United States justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan in order to end World War II.” Each side of the group should discuss the arguments they would like to make in the discussion. After internal conversation, the first side presents their case to the other side. The second side will summarize the first side’s arguments. Switch roles and repeat step 2. Then the group works on reaching a consensus about which arguments are most valid. If no consensus can be reached, determine where the key differences lie. Each student will write a response essay (~1 page) expounding upon the consensus reached or the key disagreements. This will be your participation grade.
