Why do we need to reduce waste? • We’re running out of resources • To reduce pollution • We’re running out of space • Where would you rather live?
Running out of resources • Some resources will run out if we continue to use them at current rates e.g. • Indium – used in LCD screens in less than 10 years • Tantalum – used in mobile phones, DVD players, and computers in less than 50 years
Pollution • Landfill sites can create methane – a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide. • If not properly managed, landfill contents can produce leachate which pollutes the soil.
Running out of space • Scotland produced 2,500,836 tonnes of waste in 2012. • 55.3% of this was landfilled • So 1,382,962 tonnes was landfilled • 1 car is approximately one tonne
So what can I do? - Reduce • Make things last longer • Packaging • Presents • Hire, don’t buy • Rechargeable batteries • Download music/films instead of buying CDs/DVDs • One kilogram of beef uses 15,500 litres to be produced
So what can I do? Re-use • Re-use Bags • Repair items • Buy second hand • Sell donate items • Swap items • Upcycle items to give them a new look • One kilogram of beef uses 15,500 litres to be produced • Each sheet of A4 paper uses 10 litres of water to be produced
So what can I do? Recycle • Scottish Government target 70% recycling by 2025 • Check what you can recycle at home, recycling centres, school and when you’re out and about. • Make it easier to recycle than to throw away – position recycling and compost/food waste bins in convenient locations • One kilogram of beef uses 15,500 litres to be produced • Each sheet of A4 paper uses 10 litres of water to be produced
