  1. L’imparfait (IMP) Définiton: Past tense - used to show that something happened over a period of time.

  2. The action is repeated over, and over, and over… Exemples: • Il allait à l’école le lundi. • D’habitude, nous allions à l’église le dimanche. • Elles allaient souvent au cinéma.

  3. This includes… Exemples: J’étais vachement contente ! Elles étaient assez déprimées. Tu étais furieux pendant la fête. • feelings and emotions • a mental state/condition. • When this condition began or ended is not always mentioned.

  4. Other Uses Describing Something Exemples: Vous aviez des cheveux bruns. Il faisait super chaud. Les fleurs étaient violettes et rouges. C’était le 21 octobre, 2005. • weather • what something/someone looked like over a period of time • you’re setting the scene. • tell the date in the past.

  5. “Red Flags” Should always use IMP Exemples: Elle étaittoujoursen retard pour saclasse de français. D’habitude, je faisaismes devoirs après l’école. Nous faisions de l’exercisetous les jours. • Toujours (always) • d’habitude (usually) • tous les jours (everyday) • souvent (often) • de temps en temps… (sometimes)

  6. Formation Take the « nous » form of the verb, drop the « ons », and add the following endings : • ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient

  7. Nous chantons je chantais nous chantions tu chantais vous chantiez il/elle/on chantait ils/elles chantaient I sang, you sang, he sang, we sang, you guys sang, they sang….
