VOLUNTEERS • Put time into carefully recruiting volunteers • Take time to understand their: • Motivation and what they want • Interests, skills • Availability • Match them to the appropriate position • Effort at the front end will help you retain and recognize them effectively
VOLUNTEERS • Re-assess your volunteer positions and assignments on a regular basis • Chapters needs change • People’s skills and interests change • Avoid burnout • Have a variety of opportunities • Make many of them short-term • Cross-train to offer variety and ensure succession
VOLUNTEERS • Recognize your volunteers • Make recognition meaningful to the individual • Relate recognition to their reason for volunteering • Ideas: • Potluck dinner for board members with families or friends • Gift certificate to favorite store or restaurant • Photo-collage showing service • Business card-holder for “Volunteer of the Month”
