Coin Project Joe Hill Bob Jones
Material Design • The new half-dollar will be cobalt • Cobalt has to it’s low market price per kilogram (1 pound=0.45 kilograms) (US: $.07/kilogram as of 2007). It is also fairly abundant because it is found in conjunction naturally with zinc which is inexpensive and mined on a massive scale.
To Prevent Counterfeiting • These measures will be taken to avoid counterfeit • Fine details using highly expensive machines that are only available to the buildings of the United States Mint. These details are as follows. • Extreme surface clarity and side lettering that says on the side of the coin: Carpe Noctum.
Rationale • Due to it’s low reactivity it will be hard to counterfeit. Counterfeiters, unless they have a large supply of pure cobalt will have a hard time counterfeiting it. They won’t be able to make any plated versions of the coins. • It’s low market price makes it perfect for mass-production
Source • We will import from Bolivia. Costing us an extra 2$/.45 Kilograms
Refining • Cobalt is refined through the process of Pyrometallurgy which smelts the ore so that we can separate the cobalt from the cobalt from the zinc • Heat mineral with coke ( C ) or carbon monoxide (CO). The carbon and the carbon monoxide are formed by the heat. • It involves treating metals and ores with heat, as in a blast furnace. Carbon and Carbon Monoxide are used as reducing agents (any process in which one or more electrons can be considered as gained by a chemical species) in these furnaces.
Life expectancy • Although most coins have a 30-year life expectancy, we will need to replace the coins every 25 years as a safety precaution against counterfeit. So, we will need to produce these coins at a rapid pace, but we will need to slowly take these coins out about 5 years into producing them. The rate of taking away is not known yet. • Cobalt can be smelted down and the material can be used again as soon as the coins are revoked. We will encourage.
Production • We will start by having our artists make a design. • Since we have no need to plate our coins, we will have no harmful chemicals in them.
Size and Symbolism • The coin will be roughly half an inch in diameter. • The coin will show a 50 cents sign on one side, and the face side will have a picture of JTHM, along the bottom, in place of, in God we trust will be the statement: “In Nail Bunny We Trust”. • This will encourage teenagers to spend because it shows a cultural icon.
Cost Analysis • The cost of production is fairly cheap looking at $12.07/.45kilograms • This includes the location of resources, processing, production, and distribution. • $0.07+$10.00 (average circulation price), +$2.00= $12.07
